Stars’n’Bars launches reusable takeaway cups

Stars’n’Bars will no longer serve takeaway coffee in disposable paper cups. According to the restaurant’s co-founders Didier Rubiolo and Kate Powers, “If we all switched to reusable drink containers, we could stop 500 billion paper or plastic cups ending up every year in the dump, or worse…in the ocean.”

Five hundred billion cups standing end to end would circumnavigate the globe 1360 times.
In the past, the port-side eatery has used a biodegradable disposable takeaway cup made from recycled materials but even these end up in landfills because there is no viable system to recycle them.

In fact, less than one percent of so called “recyclable” paper cups actually get recycled as paper-based cups are usually lined with a membrane of polyethylene (plastic) to make them waterproof, but it means they are not recyclable alongside paper or cardboard.

Stars’n’Bars has purchased reusable mugs that are lightweight and made from sustainable bamboo and eco-friendly silicone and will sell the mugs at a reduced price in order to encourage customers to reduce plastic waste. Customers can also bring their own refillable mugs.

Stars’n’Bars has already stopped serving plastic straws with its beverages and will only provide biodegradable straws if customers insist. Staff are also trained to explain why the ban and the dangers of plastic straws.

The switch to reusable takeaway cups is the next step in its campaign to support Monaco’s National Pact for Energy Transition, which has the goal of cutting the principality’s carbon footprint by 50 percent by the year 2030.

The Novotel Monte-Carlo inaugurated its first beehive on Wednesday, May 2, local French daily Nice-Matin reports. This is the first hive that the 3-star hotel has put in place. “This is part of an Accor Group environmental action plan and the goal is clearly to encourage pollination,” Guillaume Rapin, the hotel manager, told the newspaper.

There are already about a dozen hives on the roof of Monaco’s Coin and Stamp Museum.
“This approach is part of a partnership with the National Union of French Beekeepers. The goal is to show that cities are less polluted than the countryside, which are invaded by pesticides,” said George Restellini, head of the garden section of Monaco’s urban planning department.

Jessica Sbaraglia, the urban market gardener of Terres de Monaco, has four hives next to the Odeon Tower and will soon add six more. There are many feeding opportunities for bees in the Principality, in parks and gardens and on balconies, bee enthusiasts say.

Opera Gallery Monaco is presenting The Art of Matter, a curated group exhibition featuring six Korean and one Chinese artist, starting on May 18.

“Each artist has rigorously pushed and developed their experimentation of matter to the aesthetic and technical limits enabling them to idiosyncratically render before us their unique vision of the world,” the gallery says.

Some of the artists, Yoo Bong Sang, Lee Gil Rae, Hwang Ran, Son Bong-Chae and Seo Young-Deok, employ a figurative approach, whereas others – Cho Sung-Hee and Zhuang Hong Yi – create more meditative abstract artworks.

“Asia has firmly established itself as an important incubator for the international art world over the last few decades,” the gallery adds. “Asian art is also a field where Opera Gallery has dedicated particular energy, focus and expertise in order to best represent the exciting diversity and vitality of this energetic continent.

“What transpires through this selection is not just a superficial snapshot of Asian rooted themes promoted through these artworks but a broader reflection of the evolution of creative materiality itself through the sophisticated and alchemical handling of media.”

Contemporary artworks created by Asian artists are greatly influenced by both Eastern and Western art traditions, techniques and discourse, and most of the artists exhibiting in Monaco have studied or live abroad. An illustrated catalogue will be available at the gallery.

The Art of Matter at 1 ave Henri Dunant, Palais de la Scala, runs until June 8.

The Minister of State, accompanied by Frédéric Genta, Interministerial Delegate for Digital Transition, visited the Platinium Group SAM in Fontvieille on Wednesday, May 2, as part of his regular visits to Monegasque companies.

Created in 1985, this online ticketing software publisher offers innovative and flexible solutions to maximise ticket sales on the internet. The group supplies its software solutions for many major motorsport events, including the F1 Grand Prix, Formula E, MotoGP, WorldSuperbike, and Motocross, as well as for tennis tournament organisers ATP and WTA.

The firm’s expertise has enabled it to establish itself as one of the main players in its market segment. With a little fewer than 100 employees, including 68 based in the Principality, the group is present in 47 countries and has a turnover of nearly €100 million.

With its new partners, Bpifrance and Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners, via its WINCH Capital 3 fund, and a banking pool – CEPAC and LCL – Platinium Group SAM executives want to consolidate the group’s position in the motor sports market and develop more widely its services to the organisers of sporting and cultural events.
