La Rocca: work starts on haute cuisine restaurant in Ventimiglia

Building works have begun on a new haute cuisine restaurant in Ventimiglia’s vibrant Cala del Forte port district.

The symbolic first stone was laid at the La Rocca restaurant late last week in a ceremony led by developer Marina Development Corporation (MDC).

Situated just below the impressive Forte dell’Annunziata and neighbouring the Borgo del Forte development, the new restaurant is part of the major regeneration project for Ventimiglia’s seafront and its Cala del Forte port masterplan. It will encompass two floors with seating for 200, and offer spectacular panoramic views from its 600m2 of outdoor terraces – almost half of La Rocca’s total surface area.

The restaurant will be accessible from the quay of Cala del Forte via a lift as well as on foot from the soon-to-be built promenade that will link the port with the Borgo del Forte quarter.

MDC says it is currently in talks with a number of Michelin star chefs and restaurateurs, who it hopes will come together to manage the La Rocca restaurant.

The establishment will join several other new addresses in Ventimiglia, such as Antica Gelateria d’Autore in the historic centre and two chic restaurants, Venti in Place Colletta and DRY Ventimiglia on the Promenade Marconi.

“The laying of this first stone [at La Rocca] is an emblematic moment that marks the concrete start of urban regeneration in the Marina di Ventimiglia,” said MDC President and CEO Giuseppe Noto. “With it, the project to revitalise the city by transforming its neglected neighbourhoods into high-end facilities begins to take shape.”

Borea d’Olmo, the president and CEO of Cala del Forte, reaffirmed his hopes that the wide-reaching redevelopment in Ventimiglia would help propel the area to prominence, making it “a destination of excellence on the Italian and international scene”.

Sir Stelios unites ‘easy’ brands in Monaco

Monaco resident philanthropist and entrepreneur Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has played host to over 100 eager businessmen and women at his philanthropic foundation’s HQ on Quai Antoine 1er.

As part of a rolling series of similar events, the two-day session on 21st and 22nd October was aimed at businesses that currently trade as part of the ‘easy’ family of brands, founded by Sir Stelios in 1995. Typically, these contain ‘easy’ as a prefix to their company name, including easyJet, easyHotel and easyStorage among others.

Sessions included case studies of successful start-ups using the ‘easy’ brand as well as legal advice on protecting the brand from unauthorised use – brand theft and the use of franchising as a means of growing a business. Delegates also heard from Sir Stelios on the latest examples of his philanthropic work in Monaco, Ireland, Greece, Cyprus and the UK.

Flu jab campaigns launched in France and Monaco

Vaccination campaigns against the flu are underway in both territories, but while Frace is targeting the vulnerable, Monaco seeks to get the whole population on board.

In an official communiqué, the Monegasque government has warned that public immunity to the flu has been weakened by the Covid pandemic. Particular attention and priority have been given to the more vulnerable groups – the elderly, pregnant women, health professionals and people with chronic diseases, including for young children from six months to 17 years – but the Principality is asking all residents to get vaccinated against the flu ahead of the winter season.

Flu jabs are available for free through Monaco’s social security system and can be obtained at pharmacies with or without a prescription. They can be administered by a doctor, private nurse or a pharmacist.

In France, the government is running a similar free vaccination campaign until 31st October for: over 65s, people with certain chronic diseases, those who are obese, pregnant women, relatives of infants under six months at risk of developing a severe form of flu, health professionals how are frequently in contact with fragile patients, and home help or aides à domicile.

Until 15th November, these groups will have priority access to flu vaccine stocks. After this date, the greater public will also have free access to the jab.
