Monaco needs you! Government to host employment forum on 15th September

Who wouldn’t want to work in the world-famous Principality of Monaco? Apparently, not enough people in this post-Covid world. So, the government on Tuesday said it is stepping in with a new recruitment plan to help out Monaco’s employers.

Three years since the coronavirus pandemic upended the labour market, restaurants, bars, hotels and casinos remain short-staffed.

Economists call it a “deep, profound” shift away from service sector work, which has altered the job-market in Monaco – and the world – possibly for the long-term.

But it is not only the hospitality sector where Monaco employers are struggling to recruit, there are also voids in healthcare, banking and several digital professions including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital marketing.

Monaco will not sit idly by

“Even if Monaco offers appreciable salaries, these recruitment problems are the result of a number of factors, namely societal,” said Minister of State Pierre Dartout to assembled press on Tuesday 27th June at the Ministry of State. “It is indisputable that Covid has changed the way some people, particularly the young, approach work.”

The government announced that it is therefore initiating a ‘Monaco pour l’Emploi’ (Recruit Monaco) programme. It will be centred around a large employment forum at the Grimaldi Forum, the first of which will be held on 15th September. All the necessary players will be there: employers seeking new staff, training organisations, the state services in charge of employment and, most importantly, people looking for a job.

The second edition of the forum is already planned for March 2024, the “recruitment window” to hire seasonal workers for the summer.

Understanding why there is an employment issue in Monaco

To better gauge the employment situation in Monaco, the government is also hosting a round table twice a year that “will allow the government and its representatives to meet employers to discuss the problems they encounter, the employment situation, and the solutions that we could consider together with the support of the government,” said Christophe Robino, Monaco’s Minister of Social Affairs and Health. “But importantly, it will be with the participation of employers since it is, above all, for them that we are trying to implement this new strategy.”

On 20th June, the government met with 75 employer representatives at the Novotel to present its initiative. This meeting confirmed, said Robino, that the government “had to create this forum, and that we had to develop a support for employment in the Principality”.

The communication campaign for the forum will be in three languages to target French, English and Italian speaking candidates.

Promoting career opportunities in Monaco

The aim, said Delegate in charge of Attractiveness and Digital Transition Frédéric Genta, is to fulfill three objectives: to ensure supply meets demand, to promote the field of possibilities in Monaco and the benefits of working here, and to show people that careers can be made in Monaco, as they are in large capital cities.

Genta says digital communication will be heavily utilised to communicate its employment drive and to sell the benefits of working in the Principality.

Building sector is also struggling

As Finance Minister Jean Castellini pointed out, the Monaco economy as a whole has rebounded significantly since Covid, with 60,000 workers employed in the private sector, but “tensions remain in some sectors, particularly construction, accommodation and catering”.

Trade workers, said the minister, are proving difficult to come by, which is a big problem for a state like Monaco that is constantly under construction.

Robino announced that an agreement was about to be signed with the Chambre Patronale du Bâtiment for the co-financing of training in areas such as ironwork.

Making it easier for prospective workers

Among the biggest issues relayed by employers during the 20th June meeting: transporting and housing cross-border workers, being able to find employment for both spouses in the small state that is Monaco as well as education for children and – something which came as a surprise to the government – providing attractive salaries for bilingual workers that are currently being offered in larger cities.

“This initiative will give us the full opportunity to show that yes, it is possible to have a career in Monaco, and for us to better understand the situation between supply and demand,” said Castellini.

New employment partnership

The government is working with the Pole Emploi (employment service) to offer a digital portal on which all job offers will appear, and on which anyone can register digitally. It will allow the employment services to manage applications from outside of the Principality, even if they are not a registered job seeker in Monaco.

It means that prospective workers who might not normally apply for a job in Monaco, because of their location or distance from Monaco, will be able to let the employment services know that they are willing to travel to the Principality to work.

The Ocean Race: Team Malizia wins final stage in Genoa

Monaco Yacht Club’s Team Malizia were the first to arrive in Genoa as The Ocean Race reached its conclusion in Italy on Tuesday.

An adventure that began in Alicante, Spain in January has finally come to an end. After months of intense sailing around the globe, Team Malizia finished third in the general classification, but ended the epic voyage on a high thanks to victory in the Italian port city.

It is Team Malizia’s second victory, and it was earned thanks to some smart thinking from the Monegasque team. Skipper Boris Herrmann and his crew took the Malizia-Seaexplorer closer to the shore early on Tuesday morning, and the gentle coastal breeze blew them to victory.

Victors to be decided by a jury

The manoeuvre allowed them to overtake Team Holcim-PRB and Biotherm. The former won the overall race – for now – pipping 11th Hour Racing, whose final stage was cut short due to a collision with GUYOT Environment – Team Europe. The latter assumed responsibility for the incident, which put an end to both teams’ race from The Hague to Italy.

As a result of the collision, the winners of The Ocean Race are yet to be decided. Due to their third-place finish, Team Holcim-PRB are currently one place ahead of second-place 11th Hour Racing. A Request for Redress has been submitted by the latter, which will be considered by the World Sailing International Jury on Thursday. Any redress of one point or more will hand the title to 11th Hour Racing.

However, the day belonged to Team Malizia, who after months of sailing, can revel in their incredible feat. As Herrmann pointed out, Rosie Kuiper was the only female to do a whole lap of the planet.

“I still can’t believe it. We have done a lap around the world, pushing ourselves day in and day out, and to finish like this is so special. It’s been a crazy adventure and we had such a good time,” she said.

The Malizia-Seaexplorer will return home on Wednesday, stopping over at the Yacht Club de Monaco, where the crew are certain to receive a heroes’ welcome.

Nuits du Sud: two nights of eclectic music in Vence

nuits du sud

The 2023 edition of Nuits du Sud has been condensed from two weeks to two nights, but there’s still plenty to look forward to.

The financial costs of hosting something as large and popular as Vence’s Nuits du Sud have risen in recent years, thus causing the municipality to make the difficult decision of reducing its signature festival’s programme from a fortnight of events to just two evenings.

But the wonderful al fresco venue – the Grand Jardin – remains the same and so does the festival’s eclectic offerings, which will see artists from the reggae, hip hop, afrobeat and electro genres all perform beneath the open sky.

EMERGING LOCAL TALENT AND ESTABLISHED ARTISTS

The festival has been redubbed Nuits du Sud – La Paranthèse and though it may be shorter, it is still a marvellous chance to get to know a new generation of local artists, as well as to catch some established talent.

Four completely different acts will get the party going from 7pm on 28th July: reggae Manudigital will open the festival, followed by cool dub artist Brain Damage, then African beats’ Mariaa Siga, and last but not least, pop-rap-afro singer Mas Kit. The final set will close at 12.30am.

The next evening will see electro artists Pfel and Greem perform, then it will be the turn of eclectic Latin-pop duo Alligatorz, followed by Niçois rapper Adrï. The festival wraps up with Franco-British indie-pop rock singer Jude Todd.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT

The event, which this year is completely free of charge for the public, is also offering some great side shows during the day, like pétanque and AI activities with La Maison de l’Intelligence Artificielle.

From 7pm, food trucks will be set up in the “Garden of Delights”, and the chill space and kid’s corner will open.

Nuits du Sud has a spirit rooted in the community, with more than 120 volunteers helping to make the festival a reality in conjunction with local businesses and institutions. It also has an eco-friendly vibe, with car-pooling and shuttle options.

The festival will be taking place from 28th to 29th July. For more information and to hear clips of the artists set to play this summer, click here

Go behind-the-scenes of the Centre Scientifique de Monaco

centre scientifique de monaco

The Centre Scientifique de Monaco is opening its doors to the world – virtually – as part of its #InvestInHealth digital campaign and new fund-raising drive.

The Scientific Centre of Monaco (CSM) launched the original #InvestInHealth campaign back in 2020 to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Entirely online, the CSM posted a series of video clips from influencers, including entrepreneurs, artists, athletes and CSM patrons, that explained their personal interest in science and why the research being done at CSM is important in helping preserve environmental and human health.

Now #InvestInHealth is back with a new website as well as a new set of ambassadors promoting the platform, which together will give the public the opportunity to see the inner workings of the CSM once again and learn about the many projects the establishment is involved in.

NEW EVERY WEEK

Each Monday at 7pm, a different ambassador will hit the CSM’s social media pages of Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to offer special insights about their chosen topic.  Those tuning in will also be invited to step up their involvement with the CSM by becoming a member, participating in events and conferences or even by financing projects.

VIRTUAL TOUR

Alongside the series of fascinating talks will be a virtual tour of the CSM’s state-of-the-art facilities. “Visitors” will embark on a behind-the-scenes walk-around of the 2,500sqm building, going room-to-room to meet the CSM’s research directors and their teams, who will present their work via informative videos. The departments of marine, polar and medical biology as well as the Communicable Diseases Analysis Platform will all be open to visits.

This immersive experience, which also includes a dive into the underwater world of the CSM’s aquarium space, home to the biggest and most diverse collection of coral in Europe, was made possible through a collaboration with local Monegasque company Virtual Reality International.

Artist Jane Gemayel takes inspiration from Rodin for new gallery exhibit

jane gemayel

Monaco-resident artist Jane Gemayel’s latest collection hosted by the Adriano Ribolzi Gallery draws on inspiration from Rodin’s famous sculptures.

Called Au coeur d’un regard, Gemayel’s series of paintings and drawings embody the spirit of themes that have long been dear to her, such as femininity, love, hope and solidarity. But they are overlain with history and draw on French sculpturer Auguste Rodin as inspiration.

This collection embraces the complexity of humanity through dramatic colour, shapes and lines, creating an emotive and evocative scenario, whilst paying homage to Rodin’s attention to detail and masterful expressions of the human form.

It has been described as the “next step” in Gemayel’s artistic journey.

Au coeur d’un regard offers visitors an immersion in Jane Gemayel’s poetry, in the softness of her gaze,” says the gallery’s curators. “The series promises to amaze the public with its captivating representations and unique interpretation of femininity and beauty.”

Canadian Gemayel’s work is in great demand after her successful summer 2022 show at the Galerie Bosi in Rome. She was also featured at the Expo 2020 in Dubai, where her fluid and exciting pieces were attention-grabbing to a worldwide audience at the Monegasque Pavilion.

Au coeur d’un regard will run until 23rd September at the Adriano Ribolzi Gallery on Avenue de l’Hermitage in Monaco.
