New restaurant Conscientiae, in the former Stars ‘n’ Bars premises, to make its debut in Monaco this Friday

Conscientiae, the new project by Didier Rubiolo in the former Stars ‘n’ Bars restaurant, is ready to open its doors on the port with a “menu for the planet” and a space that will host activities promoting wellness and sustainability.

The public was undeniably saddened when Monaco’s iconic American sports bar/restaurant Stars ‘n’ Bars closed its doors earlier this year after 30 years of service to the community. But co-founder Didier Rubiolo promised that he would return with a new concept that truly embraced his and the late Kate Powers’ passion to preserve the planet.

Now, exactly six months after the closure of the premises on Quai Antoine 1er, Conscientiae is emerging as a “celebration of unity between people, nature and culture”.

What’s in a name?

The name originates from the Latin words “con”’ (with) and “scientia’ (knowledge) – “a state of profound understanding of self and what is right and wrong, to engage with the world through joint knowledge”, say its creators.

The enormous 1,800sqm space has been designed to immerse guests in nature’s bounty, crafting a tranquil sanctuary where the generous use of greenery and soil diffuses nature’s healing power. More than a restaurant, the aim is for Conscientiae to be a thought-provoking platform where entrepreneurs, investors and tastemakers are brought together to “defy the status quo by leading positive changes”.

The project has the backing of Prince Albert II of Monaco, a childhood friend of Kate Powers. She, along with husband Didier Rubiolo, was an eco-conscious visionary who revolutionised Monaco’s dining experience for more than 30 years.

According to its creators, Conscientiae represents the “natural expansion of Stars ‘n’ Bars’ vision of making a real difference for the wellbeing of Monaco and the planet”.

A menu for the planet

In this new restaurant, classically-trained chef Didier Rubiolo returned to the kitchen to explore new options for a sustainable menu.

“What and how we eat today is the direct cause of more than a third of the carbon emissions that lead to climate change. This is the ultimate threat when it comes to the safety and availability of the food we bring to our tables every day. We feel morally obliged to provide viable alternatives before it is too late,” he says. “Conscientiae wants to encourage people to improve their eating habits by creating a brand new menu inspired by world cuisines and based on fresh and sustainable ingredients ethically-sourced from local suppliers. Living conscientiously has never been more delicious.”

Conscientiae will launch on Friday 28th July and be open seven days a week, with lunch from 12pm until 3pm, and dinner starting at 7pm. In addition to its restaurant area on the ground floor, Conscientiae will host activities promoting wellness and sustainability, hoping to “soon become a community institution for the incubation of innovative ideas”.

Sheba Medical Centre to celebrate 75th anniversary with gala at the Hôtel Hermitage

sheba medical centre

The Sheba Medical Centre charity gala event in early August will celebrate 75 years of caregiving to all in need, including some of the Middle East’s most vulnerable people.

The Sheba Medical Centre in the Israeli city of Ramat Gan is the biggest full scale medical facility in the Middle East. More than two million patients come through its doors each year. Many are refugees who are both homeless and penniless, having fled from war-torn areas or hotspots such as Syria, Palestine and Iraq.

The hospital has 10,000 health care professionals on staff to treat the sick and injured, and even takes the show on the road when necessary, organising aid missions to places where medical assistance is disrupted or non-existent.

75TH ANNIVERSARY

Sheba is marking its 75th year in operation this year, and a charity gala has been organised in Monaco to help raise funds for this worthy organisation’s children’s wing, the Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital.

Under the patronage of Prince Albert II, the Hôtel Hermitage will be hosting the event, which will feature a cocktail reception, dinner and charity auction as well as live entertainment by powerhouse diva Riki Ben Ari, who participated in the 2023 Eurovision competition.

The gala is being held on 3rd August, with doors opening at 7.30pm. For more information or to get tickets, please click here

Scuderia Ferrari has confirmed that Racing Director Laurent Mekies will not be in the paddock in Belgium this weekend, leaving the team early after four and a half seasons with the team.

It had been announced earlier that Frenchman Laurent Mekies was set to take up the role of Team Principal in Faenza at the end of the season, but on Thursday Ferrari announced that his departure had been brought forward.

Their statement said: “Laurent Mekies’ time at Scuderia Ferrari comes to an end this week. The Racing Director will not be in Belgium and he leaves the Prancing Horse after four and a half seasons, during which time the team took seven wins. The entire team thanks him for his great contribution during those years.”

From the Belgium Grand Prix onwards, the role of Sporting Director will be carried out by Diego Ioverno, a 23-year veteran of the Scuderia Ferrari team.

Ioverno’s promotion is part of a restructuring effort for the Scuderia, who brought Fred Vasseur in at the beginning of the year in place of Mattia Binotto.

Football: Monaco unveil third kit in collaboration with Oceanographic Museum

Monaco third kit unveiling at the Oceanographic Museum

AS Monaco has released its third kit, an ocean-themed set named “Oceano” that was created in collaboration with the Oceanographic Museum.

Once again, Monaco have collaborated with Kappa for the 2023/24 season. Following the release of the club’s new 100% recycled home kit earlier this month, Monaco’s third kit was released during a presentation at the iconic Oceanographic Museum on the Rock on Wednesday 26th July.

This isn’t the first collaboration between the Oceanographic Museum and the Principality’s football club. Earlier this year, the two parties signed a convention in order to help amplify a collective environmentalist message.

Subtle inclusion of the iconic ‘Diagonale’

Not only was Monaco’s third kit unveiled at the Oceanographic Museum, but €5 from each shirt sale will be donated to the Oceanographic Institute in order to support conservation and mediation initiatives. The shirt will also be sold in the Museum, as well as in the club’s official shop and online. The jersey is priced at €110.

The shirt itself is also a homage to the ocean and incorporates the iconic “Diagonale” in a subtle way. The blue and white colour gradations depict a shoreline reminiscent of the Mediterranean blue lapping against the beaches of the Côte d’Azur, and is a physical representation of Monaco’s commitments to ocean preservation.

Like the recently-released home kit, Oceano is made from 100% recycled polyester, therefore meeting sustainability criteria.

Bairols forest fire continues to burn, others brought under control

bairols

Around 60 hectares are now estimated to have been lost to the fire in the commune of Bairols, a village of 100 people to the north of Nice.

The wildfire in the Bairols commune, a relatively remote village found an hour’s drive north of Nice and on the road to the popular mountain resorts of Isola and Auron, began on Tuesday 25th July.

But despite the best efforts of firefighters on the ground and aerial support teams, the fire was reportedly still “very active” at lunchtime on Thursday 27th July, and had spread to an estimated 60 hectares of woodland.

The main issue facing the firefighting services is the extremely difficult terrain. 100 or so firefighters are believed to be onsite tackling the blaze, and a number of these were dropped into target zones by helicopter, according to Nice Matin, because of the complexity of accessing the area by other means.

Waterbombing helicopters were drafted in on the first afternoon of the blaze and are continuing to provide support to the teams on the ground on this second day of action.

ELSEWHERE

Two additional fires in Cagnes sur Mer and Falicon, which saw 10 and seven hectares of land destroyed by the flames respectively, have been brought under control, but firefighting personnel are reportedly still surveying the sites.

In both instances, large numbers of firefighters from the Sapeurs Pompiers 06 were brought it to help stop the spread of the fires and extinguish them as quickly as possible due to their urban contexts.
