Basketball: AS Monaco Roca Team make it three in a row

Monaco Basketball

AS Monaco Basketball registered their third victory on the bounce in all competitions after comfortably overcoming Panathinaikos (84-70), whilst some familiar faces returned to the Salle Gaston Médecin.

The clouds of crisis have dissipated at the Principality club over the course of the past week. Victories against Maccabi Tel Aviv, Nanterre and then Panathinaikos on Wednesday ensured that their prior defeats were merely a blip.

The Roca Team have diversified their assets this season. There is no denying that Mike James (11 points) essentially has the keys to this Monégasque project, but players such as Jordan Loyd (18 points), Alpha Diallo (18 points) and Elie Okobo (12 points, four assists) have definitely decreased the dependence on the American point guard.

Diallo and Loyd were particularly decisive in the fixture against their Greek opponents. The former scored eight consecutive points for Monaco in the first quarter, and as always, was diligent and efficient in his defensive work.

Roca Boys back in town

Panathinaikos possess a considerable and familiar attacking arsenal. Dwayne Bacon (10 points) and Paris Lee (nine points), who both played for Monaco last season, returned to the Salle Gaston Médecin, but struggled to influence the game. The aggression and intensity of Monaco’s defence limited their opponents to difficult shots, often on the buzzer.

The Roca Team are used to winning games with their attack, but this one was won with their defence. Already cruising going into the fourth quarter, Panathinaikos withered away at the beginning of the final 10 minutes, allowing Monaco to stride to a comfortable victory (84-70).

The win temporarily moves Monaco above Fenerbahçe in the Euroleague, which is significant, as finishing inside the top four would secure home-court advantage for the end-of-season play-offs.

“Monaco really accelerated in the final quarter and we couldn’t respond,” began former Roca Boy Lee. “Returning here, there is a lot of emotion. I met up with my former teammates and I miss them.”

“All the players gave it their all. We were very aggressive in defence and that paid off with many balls in transition. Now, we have to move on to Baskonia. After finishing late tonight (Wednesday), we have little time to prepare for this match,” said Sasa Obradovic post-match.

Monaco travel to Spain to face Baskonia on Friday, under 48 hours after a gruelling Euroleague display.

Violinist Maxim Vengerov steps in to replace Daniel Barenboim at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo

Daniel Barenboim has sadly had to postpone his sold-out concert at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo this weekend due to ill health, but it’s not all bad news as violinist Maxim Vengerov will perform in his place.

“Since last year, I have been suffering from a serious illness,” said Barenboim in a statement via the Opéra. “Although my state of health has fortunately greatly improved over the past few weeks, allowing me to resume my activities as a conductor, I regret to inform you that, despite all my efforts, I have not yet acquired muscle strength needed to perform piano recital programmes. It is with great sadness that I cancel my recital in Monaco, but as I continue to work and my health improves, I am determined to return to the Monte-Carlo Opera at the earliest possible opportunity, be that as a pianist or conductor!”

Barenboim is considered one of the leading pianists and conductors of our age, and had been scheduled to perform Beethoven’s last three piano sonatas on Friday 10th March.

In his place will now be violinist Maxim Vengerov, who thankfully accepted a last-minute invitation to perform at the behest of the new director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Cecilia Bartoli. The two are pictured above at a joint concert in 2018.

“I would like to thank Maxim for having accepted our invitation after several years of absence on the stage of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo,” said Bartoli. “Accompanied by the pianist Roustem Saitkoulov, Maxim Vengerov will give a beautiful [and] romantic recital of Beethoven, Franck and Tchaikovsky.”

Monaco “turns its eyes to the future” at MEWS 2023 Conference

mews monaco

This May, Monaco will host the 2023 Metaverse Entertainment World Summit and Awards Show at One Monte-Carlo alongside a charity gala and ground-breaking exhibitions.

The Metaverse Entertainment World Summit and Awards Show (MEWS), held under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, is running from 3rd to 5th May at One Monte-Carlo. On the agenda: exhibits, networking events, concepts, talks and experiences designed bring the ideas of tomorrow here to us today.

The organisers say it will be “a highly curated conference [with] break-out sessions, NFT, metaverse, AI, AR, tech and immersive experiences” centred on this fast-growing world.

One exhibitor is Phygicode, a company who has labelled itself as an incubator for brand exploration. It will be showcasing a one-of-a-kind piece of clothing that will be reimagined in phygital form. Camille Louise Jewellery is partnering on the experience and will be collaborating with Phygicode to create something completely new on the fashion front.

A charity gala and awards show will take place on 4th May at the Hotel Hermitage to celebrate the MEWS International Metaverse Awards Winners for 2023. The new laureats, comprised of 10 break-out metaverse and web3 talents, will be selected by a panel of global experts including: the founder of Art Day, Georg Bak; Martha Boeckenfeld, the Dean of the Metaverse Academy; and the CEO of Listen Charity, Tony Hollingsworth. Michelin-starred Yannick Alléno will provide the gourmet element of the night, which will be punctuated by a web3 illiusionist.

The basic definition of a metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social and economic connections. It is what many “in the know” believe will be the next iteration of the internet; a place where people can go and inhabit 3D virtual spaces, having experiences they could not in the physical world. As of now, it is not yet at the full-scale virtual reality stage, but is still popular and habitually accessed by consumers via niche apps for entertainment and games.

Monacollecte: An eco-friendly way to dispose of unwanted items

monacollecte

Coming up is Monacollecte, an event that focuses on collecting and sorting items that are no longer wanted or needed, but could easily find a home elsewhere.

Just in time for spring cleaning, Monacollecte is back for its second edition, giving people the perfect opportunity to drop off perfectly good items they simply don’t want or know what to do with in Port Hercule over two days: 3rd and 4th March.

The goal of the day is: “To offer Monegasques the opportunity to get rid of, at a single point, all the objects that cause them problems, either because they do not know where to put them or because they do not want to throw them away because they are still in good state,” according to Marie Berard, Deputy Director of Environmental Cleanliness at the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement or Monegasque Sanitation Company, who is hosting the event.

2022’s successful event welcomed nearly 3,000 visitors and this year’s promises to be even bigger. Many local charities, such as Fight Aids Monaco, Mission Enfants, the Monegasque Red Cross, Les Amis du Liban, Semeurs d’Espoir Monaco and the Nice Foundation, will be in attendance to snap up things they can pass on, making this an event that also has a feel-good factor. A last-minute entry is the Monaco Parents’ Association, who are collecting old school clothes in good condition to be used by the next generation of children in need.

In addition to the work at hand, there will be a number of fun activities taking place, such as the performance of funny skits, playfully called Ratatouille Rhapsody by the Compagnie Ça s’peut pas, which they call a “family and participatory show that addresses food waste and seasonal and local consumption with humour and music.” There’s also an escape game based on the story of a laboratory who has developed the Dechetivore 3000; a machine capable of eliminating waste. They want to keep it secret, so players will need to use their wits to break into the lab and find the plans in under 45 minutes.

“A virtual assistant, available on the Your Monaco app, will lead the game,” Berard explains. “This is an opportunity to introduce this new app function, which has a sorting assistant.”

The popular Mùnegu Repair Café is joining in on the Saturday, giving those who have reparable items, including clothes and small appliances, a chance to get them fixed for free.

Free compost will be available to any who turns up with a container to take it home and a stand will be set up to speak about the virtues of collective and individual composting. Several other exhibits and information stands will be dotted around the port.

The event is co-organised by the Société Monégasque d’Assainissement and the Department of Urban Waste, in partnership with the town hall of Monaco. To learn more, please click here.

Save the Date: Full listing of SBM’s The Sea is Green programme

the sea is green

Société des Bains de Mer is showcasing its green credentials and flair for art de vivre with a new cultural programme this spring. Here’s the full list of events, from music recitals and gourmet dinners to underwater tours of the coast.

11th March

The Sea of Green begins on 11th March with a prestigious dinner recital, Musique de l’Eau, at the Hotel Hermitage. The Winter Garden will host this exceptional night of culture – one that combines music with haute cuisine and an art exhibition – described by Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) as a “tribute to a more gentle way of life”.  Monegasque pianist Stella Almondo is to perform while Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno will provide the gourmet accoutrements in the form of a four-course meal alongside a display of sea-themed creations by ceramist Jean Boghossian. Tickets to the event cost €410.

13th to 17th March

Chefs from SBM’s glowing portfolio of restaurants will spend four days preparing food for and assisting at the Fourneau Economique in Nice, a space for vulnerable people to get a welcome meal free-of-charge, in association with Solidarpole.

22nd March

A round-table event entitled ‘Sustainable Hospitality and the Protection of the Oceans’ and hosted by journalist Leila Ghandi will take place at the Hotel Hermitage as part of Monaco Ocean Week. Free diver Pierre Frolla will form part of the panel.

10th May

In a departure from the hotels of the SBM resorts, this event takes guests underwater and is a discovery tour of the underwater reef off the coast of the Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel, which is home to endemic species of flora and fauna. Places are limited to 15 people maximum and it’s on a first come first served basis.

12th May

Although not officially a part of The Sea is Green, the inauguration of the Green Hub at Monte-Carlo Beach, a new watersports facility that offers non-motorised activities, is inextricably linked to the mission behind the overall programme. Not much has been announced about the Green Hub yet so stay tuned!

Ongoing exhibitions

Ceramicist Jean Boghossian is offering two exhibitions during The Sea is Green: one in the gardens and urban spaces of Monaco, and another in the lobby and Winter Garden of the Hotel Hermitage. Both run from 10th March to 10th May.

A series of marine-inspired sculptures by Ti’Ou will be on show at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort from 10th March to 10th May.

For something truly special, an installation by Céline Pagès and Madame Ernest that uses recycled materials to create an immersive experience of swimming with giant jellyfish will be housed in the Atrium of the Monte-Carlo Casino from 10th March to 10th May.

Photographer Olivier Jude is due to display a collection of rare underwater shots of the Larvotto nature reserve between 7th April and 10th May as part of the cultural season, but the location is yet to be revealed.
