A diverse Monaco Run programme returns with something for every fitness level

The Monaco Run, the annual two-day racing event taking place on Quai Albert Ier, attracts everyone from world-class athletes to weekend warriors and families looking for a bit of fun and exercise. To sweeten the pot, Pink Ribbon Monaco will also be joining with their famous five-kilometre walk to bring awareness and raise funds for breast cancer.  

The Monaco Run returns to Port Hercule on 11th and 12th February with five separate events made for young and old.  

The 1,000-metre races will take place on Saturday in a succession of races depending on age. Children and adults can both take part in this fast-paced run, with the first race kicking off at 2pm on the Quai Albert Ier. This a free event, but all runners must be signed up beforehand.  

Sunday features the five-kilometre run at 10am. The race will start from Port Hercule before heading to Monte Carlo Bay, passing through the famous F1 Grand Prix tunnel and then onto Larvotto. This race, though not long in duration, has seen many records broken, including a world record set by Joshua Cheptegei in 2020.  

For a bit more of a trial, the 10-kilometre run is hugely popular, and starts at the same time and place as the five, only participants are challenged to do the course twice. This race too will have professional runners taking place, looking to set records and beat personal bests.  

Sunday also is host day to the City Trail race, which this year can be done in a timed 12-kilometre race or as an untimed seven-kilometre fun run-style event. This unique race takes runners through Monaco’s parks and backstreets as well as past monuments and places of interest such as the Palace and the Oceanographic Museum. The race has an early 8am start.  

Last but not least, Pink Ribbon Monaco’s five-kilometre walk has a 10am start from Port Hercule where participants are asked to get their pink on for a good cause. This easy walk for all was created by Pink Ribbon’s founder Natasha Frost-Savio in 2011, and has grown to the premiere breast cancer awareness event in Monaco.

Extremely rare ancient jewellery and art reaches Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo

Lovers of the ancient world will not want to miss the Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo auction on Tuesday 7th February, which features lots of incredibly rare ancient items from craftsmen and artists from Ancient Greece, Rome, China and South America, to name a few.  

The exquisite craftsmanship of these pieces, each one unique, must be seen to be fully appreciated, and includes works from ancient artists from around the world.  

The morning will commence at 9.30am with the sale of amulets and scarabs from different eras and regions, and include gorgeous trinkets like a 25mm carved turquoise cat pendant and mini-sculpted amulets from ancient Egypt.   

Jewellery is next up with some notable pieces such as a Phoenician swivel seal ring from the 8th to 9th centuries BC, estimated at €8,000 to €12,000. A pair of stunning 4th to 3rd centuries BC Greek drop earrings made of gold with tiny crafted images of the god Eros delicately attached on either side of an ornamental disk is likely to go for €15,000 to €20,000, and a winding gold serpent-headed arm bracelet dating from Ancient Rome has been valued at €15,000 to €30,000.  

In the afternoon at the Hôtel des Ventes de Monte-Carlo, an extraordinary collection of ancient coins put together by a Monaco collector will be up for auction, as will some fascinating pieces of neolithic and ancient Egyptian art. A practically undamaged terracotta jar with the painted motifs still vibrant dating from roughly 3500BC is expected to go for €12,000 to €15,000, and a peerless coiled cobra shaped glazed ornament from the late Ptolemaic period has a price tag in the region of 15,000 to €20,000. A statue of the jackal-god Anubis is expected to fetch €80,000 to €120,000.  

An ornately carved Roman funerary urn with a removable lid made of marble dating from the 1st century AD is also up for grabs at €15,000 to €20,000 and a marble head of Bacchus as a child is expected to go for €25,000 to €30,000.  

Far Eastern and pre-Columbian pieces will be last up, with a range of pieces going under the gavel for just a few hundred up to an eye-watering €100,000.

Monaco et Suisse Investment Forum: an exclusive networking event

Hand-picked guests from Monaco and Switzerland’s top management institutions and family offices are being invited to take part in an exclusive event aimed at solidifying business connections as well as forging new ones.  

The upcoming Monaco et Suisse Investment Forum, due to be held on 17th March at the Yacht Club de Monaco, will feature 25 specifically chosen companies and exhibitors, giving an invitation-only crowd of the “who’s who” in the Swiss and Monaco business and finance scenes the chance to meet and mingle in a setting conducive to making lasting connections.  

With a more interactive take on the format and a guest list of invitees that will top out at just over 250, this second edition will be a more intimate event than last year’s conference.   

On the day, guests will get straight down to business with a 9am reception and coffee followed by an opening speech. From 10am to 6.30pm, the day will be filled out with panels talks, seminars and networking sessions designed to give the assembled crowd the best chances to connect.  

Though officially a one-day meet-up, there will also be a welcome aperitif-cocktail party on 16th March at an as yet undisclosed location. 

The Monaco et Suisse Investment Forum is headed up by representatives from both countries, with Monaco’s Raffaello Cairoli as its director and Switzerland’s Paolo Caspani as co-organiser.

Call for young inventors to take part in Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge

Registration is now open for the 2023 Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge, a competition created to give young inventive minds the chance to present innovative ways to protect, and possibly even save, the world’s oceans.  

Being a coastal nation, Monaco has always had ties to the seas, and modern leaders of the country have striven to raise awareness on their related issues. One of the many ways the Principality seeks to be part of the solution to the world’s ocean woes is through action as well as campaigns that get people thinking about what can be done. The Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge, a collaborative project between the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, the International University of Monaco, the Monaco Impact Association and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, is one such event.  

This year marks the sixth edition of the Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge, and the fourth year since it has gone from being a local event to an international competition, bringing together university students and young professionals from around the world to find creative ways to solve the multi-pronged crises facing the oceans.   

To enter in the Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge, teams must be registered by 24th March, handing in an executive summary along with a Power Point presentation on the proposed project. Judges will then select a group of semi-finalists to present a business plan and a one-minute video explaining the project by 2nd May. The judges will chose finalists by 11th May, before going on to decide the winners in June.   

To date, over 200 participants have taken part, with winners including: Watch Your Anchor, an app that allows captains to know where they can anchor without harming sea beds; Hy-Plug, an initiative to develop hydrogen charging stations in ports; and Wype, a company that eliminates the need for environmentally-unfriendly wet-wipes on boats with a gel alternative.

A night of inspiration and talent at the Academie Rainier III

A major showcase of the incredible talent nurtured at the Académie Rainier III is to take place this month under the instruction of its respected director, Jade Sapolin, and supported by Karyn Ardisson-Salopek, Monaco’s deputy mayor and chosen delegate to the institution.  

On Thursday 9th February, the Academy’s musicians will perform a ‘Concert des Ensembles’ at the Théàtre des Variétés on 1 Boulevard Albert I in Monaco from 6.30pm. 

It is an opportunity to discover the various musical forms and ensembles of the Académie Rainier III, from chamber music to cellists and a wind orchestra. The night promises a musical experience that is both inspiring and beautiful.

Piano recital raising funds for those with mental disability

Monaco will host this year’s L’Arche à Grasse annual charity gala, with a star performance by the brilliant Rainier III Academy alumni and world-renowned pianist and composer, Nicolas Horvath.  

 The Théâtre des Variétés will be hosting a night of exquisite piano playing for a good cause on 4th February, giving music lovers a good reason to get out on a frosty winter night.  

Starting at 6pm, Nicolas Horvath, a native Monegasque who has made a name for himself on the worldwide stage, will be playing a selection of pieces by composers as diverse as Frédéric Chopin, Erik Satie, Philip Glass and Claude Debussy before heading off to Rome where he is playing three performances.  

Proceeds from the concert, tickets to which cost €30 for adults and €15 for those under 26, will benefit L’Arche à Grasse. Run by Jean Vanier for the past 13 years, he had created a safe space for mentally disabled adults, and the funds from the concert will help pay for necessities like household appliances and its upkeep, as well as for computer equipment. Past donations have paid for a multi-sport area, much loved by the patients.
