How to celebrate Monaco’s patron saint: Sainte Devote

With the commemoration day of the Principality’s patron saint coming up, Monaco Life presents the roster of events as well as how you can get involved.

Sainte Devote, the fourth century martyr who later became patron saint of both Monaco and Corsica, is celebrated in the Principality on 26th and 27th January.

Her story is rather a gruesome one, with the legend saying she was tortured and killed for her Christian faith on her native island of Corsica. It was reported that her mouth was crushed and she was dragged through brambles and over rocks. Eventually, she was either put to the rack or stoned to death.

After her passing, it was ordered that she be burnt to prevent veneration, but her body was saved by fellow Christians and placed in a boat headed for Africa. The boat was blown off course by a storm and landed instead in Monaco.

A chapel was built in her honour in the hollow of the Vallon des Gaumates, where it still stands today. It is said that flowers bloom before their seasonal time on 27th January, her official saint’s day.

This year in Monaco, her day is marked with special tributes. In the early evening of 26th January, the public are invited to gather on the Albert 1er embankment to watch the ceremonial arrival of the boat, as well as to see the relics associated with the young saint. A procession will then begin, taking the crowd to the Sainte Devote Chapel, where a holy sacrament is performed, before the boat is lit on fire by Prince Albert II and the Princely family in her memory. A drone display is then scheduled above the Palace of Monaco and can be witnessed from the secure area on Port Hercule.

The next morning, the relics will be taken to the Cathedral and a high mass celebrated, led by Archbishop of Monaco Dominique-Marie David. After the service, another procession will take place, this time around Monaco Ville, while the archbishop blesses the palace, the town and the sea.

At 4pm on 27th January, the Direction des Affaires Culturelles de Monaco has organised a concert featuring the traditional organ played by Silvano Rodi at the Eglise Sainte Dévote. Entry is free although space may be limited.

Artist Luiza Ansay unveils new collection

Polish-born artist, actress and model Luiza Ansay, who now lives in Monaco, has opened her latest exhibition at the Gabarino Interior Design atelier with a decidedly eastern flair.

The exhibit, entitled ‘Japonisme de Luiza’ features her bold and unique style in a range of pieces inspired by the Japanese art movement. Her use of new techniques and mixed media have created an inspired collection that a select group of guests were recently able to enjoy.

“I am thrilled to be debuting my work in Monaco and to have the opportunity to introduce my art to new audience,” said Ansay. “I put a lot of time and effort into creating these pieces, and it is satisfying to see them appreciated in this way.”

Her show was an exclusive event attended by invitation only, but those interested in her work can contact her on Instagram or via Johanna Antonucci on +33 672 85 95 49.

Ansay has been on the international art scene for nearly two decades, and her art is “an example of the process of transformation”, where she uses her mind’s eye to reproduce her subjects.

Francesco Totti to star in Fight AIDS Cup

The Fight AIDS Cup will return for a third edition next Monday with footballing legends Francesco Totti, Clarence Seedorf and Luca Toni all set to participate in the charitable football match.

The event at the Stade Louis II, organised within the framework of the 45th International Circus Festival, will raise money for Princess Stéphanie’s charity, Fight AIDS Monaco.

As with previous editions, stars of football’s past and present will descend on the Principality for a match – organised by Barbagiuans’ president Louis Ducruet – between Prince Albert II’s Barbagiuans and Princess Stéphanie’s Cirque FC.

Claude Puel, who led AS Monaco to the French title in 2000, will be on a Barbagiuans’ side that has lost the previous two editions.

“Through this match, we are defending a beautiful cause and the stakes are not limited to the result. Despite this, the Barbagiuans really want to win, to reverse the trend, and experience the joy of being, for the first time, the holders of the title,” said 61-year-old Puel, who has also managed local rivals Nice, as well as Leicester City and Southampton in the Premier League.

Sébastien Frey will captain a Cirque FC side that also includes last year’s Man of the Match, Luca Toni, as well as Clarence Seedorf and Robert Pires. On the opposing team, Charles Leclerc will line up for the Barbaguians alongside former Chelsea player Ricardo Carvalho.

A charitable match in name and purpose, next Monday’s Fight AIDS Cup is expected to be once again a fierce contest of some of the former greats of the game, all while raising money for a good cause.

Tickets can be bought on AS Monaco’s online ticket office, or at the Stade Louis II.
