Ninja Box at Espace Léo Ferré to release the inner warrior

The Monaco Mairie has organised a fun new event in May, the Ninja Box, where kids and teens can put their warrior skills to the test.

Inspired by the famous French TV series Ninja Warrior: Le Parcours des héros, the Mairie has organised for two sporting courses to be set up in the multipurpose room.

One set of obstacles will be adapted for children aged three to eight, while the other will accommodate those aged nine to 14.

Maurane Jélic, winner of the previous edition of Ninja Warrior, will be on hand for two performances during theday.

It is a great opportunity for young people to take up the challenge and see what they are capable of achieving on the “hero’s journey”.

The event is aimed at young Monegasques, residents and schoolchildren of the Principality aged from three to 14. Participants may be accompanied by a guest from outside of Monaco.

Single price ticket is €15, and for the youngest participants, a parent or accompanying person will have free access to the room.

The number of places is limited. Tickets will be available soon at Espace Léo Ferré and on site the day of the event.

Ninja Box will be held on Saturday 13th May from 10am to 6pm at Espace Léo Ferré.

Pilot of Gimli Glider among personalities in Monaco this month

The Air League of Monaco is hosting an interesting event this week, a seated dinner and Q&A with Captain Robert Pearson, the pilot who famously glided a passenger jet to safety in Canada after it had run out of fuel.

On Wednesday 3rd May, guests will be welcomed to a special event at the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation Conference Hall in Monaco, where Captain Robert Pearson will be guest speaker.

Captain Robert “Bob” Pearson and First Officer Maurice Quintal were flying Flight 143 to Ottawa when the Boeing 767 ran out of fuel, and consequently power in both engines and landing gear. Captain Pearson, also an experienced glider pilot, managed to land the plane on a closed runway that was being used as a race track. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured in the incident. The airliner was forever known as the Gimli Glider, and in 1985, Pearson and Quintal were awarded the first ever Fédération Aéronautique Internationale Diploma for Outstanding Airmanship.

Guests on Wednesday will be treated to a screening of the Discovery Channel’s documentary on the Gimli Glider, a Q&A with Captain Pearson, and a three course dinner. Money raised will go towards the Air League of Monaco, which was formed in November 2013 as a Monaco Charity. It is dedicated to “keeping Monaco and its surrounding area at the forefront of Aviation” and helps young people start a career in aviation by offering scholarships and awards.

It has Prince Albert II as its principal patron, while Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Dame Shirley Bassey, former F1 driver Thierry Boutsen, and Monaco Ambassadors Club president Christian Moore are also among its patrons.

NMNM welcomes an exhibit into the “schizo-frenzied” works of George Condo

American artist George Condo’s imaginative and eclectic art works of subjects not-quite-human are going on show at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.

George Condo is a contradiction. He is both a Warhol acolyte and a lover of Old Masters. He played in a punk band in New York, but studied Baroque and Rococo painting. He also has rejected the old and supplanted it with his own version of modern art: a style comprised of figurative subjects that are the sort of things one would recognise, and sort of not.  

The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (NMNM) has seized upon these contradictions and brought the works of the American artist, who is being represented by Hauser & Wirth, to the Principality for an exhibition entitled “Humanoids”, which is running from 31st March until 1st October. 

“The ‘humanoid’ is not a science fiction monster, it is a form of representation that uses traditional means to bring deep emotions to the surface of a person,” says Condo of his works.

The exhibition’s pieces use a sort of reversed Cubist approach, taking subjects to the edge of being deformed in the Picasso way, but bringing it back to make them “almost human”, with the result being a unique mix of traditional portraiture and Cubist representations.  

Condo’s subjects range from Guido to Bugs Bunny to total unknowns, making it a real roller coaster ride for visitors. French curator Didier Ottinger calls Condo’s approach “schizo-frenzied”, saying he, unlike Warhol, chose “the museum over the supermarket” to great effect.

The artist’s ties to the Principality go back to the 1990s, when Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo’s Artistic Director Jean-Christophe Maillot invited him to create a stage curtain in 1998. Two years later, he returned, but this time he was asked to design the scenography and costumes for the Opus 40 ballet.

Monaco Streaming Film Festival now open for submissions

The Monaco Streaming Film Festival will be back in autumn for its third edition, but it is already casting the net for submissions from talented filmmakers from around the globe.  

The Monaco Streaming Film Festival, an event that is “dedicated to showcasing the best in filmmaking from around the world”, is looking for filmmakers to submit their latest streaming projects for consideration. 

FILMS… BUT SO MUCH MORE 

Now in its third year, the festival features dozens of films – some of them premieres – that are set to be sold directly to the streaming market. 

It’s a great opportunity for exposure for filmmakers, but the festival also brings together producers, creators and talent along with distributors, sales and technology providers to network and look at ways to get projects from the planning stages to the streaming services.  

Complementary side events include access to an array of industry insider information at panel discussions, masterclasses and keynote presentation events.  

There is also an awards show, which celebrates the best of the best in a variety of categories, such as Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Short Film, Best Documentary Short, Best Music Video and Best Animation. Plus, the jury members select three distinctive films for consideration. The winners receive the Jury’s Special Gold, Silver or Bronze prize.  

EARLY BIRD SUBMISSIONS

Submissions can now be sent in, with the first 50 applicants getting a 25% entry fee discount. The early bird deadline is set for 31st May, and the final deadline for submissions is 31st August.

Open-air cinema this May at Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort

Sea, stars and cinema await at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort’s open-air screening evening of Le Grand Bleu in May.  

Save the date for 10th May, when Monte-Carlo Bay will host a special al fresco evening of cinema beneath the stars as part of the ongoing “The Sea is Green” programme.  

Guests will be immersed in comfort as they are seated in deckchairs near the lagoon and treated to a finger food menu featuring the “best of the sea” in a street food style to watch a screening of the 1988 cult classic Le Grand Bleu by celebrated director Luc Besson.  

Considered one of the most beautiful films ever made, the story is a heavily fictionalised drama about a rivalry between real-life free divers Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca, who both set “no limits” deep diving records, going below 100 metres without the use of any breathing equipment. Though they compete against each other to see who can go deeper and stay under longest, it is not contentious, and the pair are friends, though neither can resist the lure of trying to outdo the other, making for a seriously dangerous game. 

The story is gripping, but it is the underwater photography, which is visually astonishing, and the emotionally intense content that hooked people in back when it was first released.  

Doors open at 7.30pm and the cost is €65 for adults and €35 for children under 12. This includes the film plus a main dish and dessert from the menu.

Garden inspiration at the Villa Ephrussi rose festival

Full buds and flowers bursting into bloom, nothing says spring more in the garden than the arrival of roses. Enjoy them in all their glory at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild this weekend.  

Over the course of two days, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April, the gardens of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on Saint Jean Cap Ferrat will be throwing their gates open to the public for a special event on the roses and plants that grow within the boundaries.  

The head gardener will be hosting a series of workshops for adults and children, while an official guide will lead visitors on tours through the incredible property’s “nine sacred gardens”.  

Local farmers, rose growers and nurseries will also be on hand, selling everything from the plants themselves to equipment. It’s the perfect opportunity to ask the professionals any questions you have about your garden and growing roses.  

Inspiration in the gardens

And if that’s not inspiration enough, pianist Steve Villa Masonne will be setting up his signature red piano in the heart of the gardens for an unforgettable performance accompanied by the Lumin Art ballerina duo next to the Villa Ephrussi’s famous musical fountains.  

It’s the 12th edition of this successful – and scented – event. Tickets cost €16 per adult, €13 for seven to 17-year-olds and a family pass costs €45.
