Photos + Video: Princely family come together for Bal de la Rose 2023

Prince Albert, his sister Caroline Princess of Hanover, and members of the Princely family gathered on Saturday night for one of the year’s biggest social events, the Bal de la Rose.

Guests were welcomed to the Salle des Etoiles at the Sporting for a night of Bollywood, the theme chosen by the Princess of Hanover, President of the Princess Grace Foundation, and realised by her friend Christian Louboutin.

Joining Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Princess of Hanover were her four children: Andrea and Pierre Casiraghi, with their wives Tatiana and Beatrice, Charlotte Casiraghi, and Princess Alexandra of Hanover with her partner Ben-Sylvester Strautmann.

Christian Louboutin had carte blanche for the high-profile event, and embraced the vibrant theme enthusiastically. “For this Bal de la Rose 2023, it seemed natural to me to combine the aesthetics of the Pink City of Jaipur, Rajasthan, with the extravagance and magnificence of Bollywood,” said the renowned shoe designer.

The Salle des Etoiles was transformed into a film studio in which Bollywood dancers took guests on a journey of song and dance, telling the story of Beauty, a young Indian woman, invited to participate in the Bal de la Rose for the first time. Unable to find a dress for the big day, Beauty faints, only to be awoken by a pair of beautiful Louboutin shoes.

The colourful room was filled with 12,000 roses, and 6,000 French marigolds and carnations. A troupe of 31 Bollywood dancers entertained guests as they dined on an Indian-themed menu that included langoustine with mango pickles, black cod tandoori, and lamb korma curry, all washed down with Perrier Jouët Belle Epoque Champagne, Cuvee 2013.

Meanwhile, Mika took to the stage to perform some of his greatest hits, including Relax, Grace Kelly, and Love Today.

A raffle, hosted by Stéphane Bern, offered a number of exceptional prizes including an 18-carat white gold and diamond Chanel Lion necklace, Christian Louboutin ‘Peep Tosachi’ heels made from sari fabric, and a Louis Vuitton ‘Capucines’ bag in pearly pink leather with rose gold details.

All money raised went towards the Princess Grace Foundation. Created in 1964 by Princess Grace, her foundation supports humanitarian and cultural projects in aid of children. After the death of Princess Grace in 1982, her husband Prince Rainier III gave the presidency of the foundation to their daughter Caroline, Princess of Hanover.

Before Christian Louboutin, it was Caroline’s late dear friend Karl Lagerfeld who was artistic director of the Bal de la Rose. The event was established in 1954 to launch the party season in the Principality of Monaco. Hosted by the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), this Spring spectacular has become a not-to-be-missed event.

Basketball: Monaco qualify for Euroleague playoffs, Mike James set to return from suspension

For consecutive seasons, AS Monaco Basketball have made the Euroleague playoffs, this time booking their place with four games to spare with a victory over Valencia (90-76) on Friday.

Baskonia’s defeat on Thursday left the door open for Monaco to secure an early qualification for this year’s playoffs, having pulled off the same feat in their debut season. However, the manner of this year’s regular season success was completely different.

Last season, the Roca Team’s progression was dependent on a late run and the expulsion of Russian teams due to the war in Ukraine. The serenity with which they accomplished the task this year is emblematic of a team that is now well and truly at home at the highest level of European basketball.

It looked like Monaco wouldn’t turn up for their big night in the opening actions. Indiscipline proved costly as their Spanish opponents looked to spoil the party at the Salle Gaston Médecin.

Sasa Obradovic was forced into an early timeout, which had little to no immediate effect. Monaco were trailing in Valencia’s wake, but having got into their slipstream late in the first quarter, they overtook them in the second.

Matthew Strazel (13 points) produced the game-changing moment with one of his three three-pointers before Jaron Blossomgame (14 points), and Yakuba Ouattara (six points), who scored back-to-back three-pointers, created a decisive break with a 12-point streak (45-34).

No James, no problem

From there, Valencia were playing catch-up, and whilst their efficiency outside the key throughout kept them within striking distance, the lead was never cut sufficiently to put pressure on Les Monégasques.

Any progress made by Valencia was followed by a capitulation, notably on the return from the dressing rooms when Strazel completed an unreplied 10-point streak with a sumptuous three-pointer.

This was yet another collective masterclass from Obradovic’s men, and once again in the absence of Mike James. The club announced on Thursday that James was going to be reintegrated into the team, but not before the issues that led to the initial suspension were sorted.

The American’s absence, however, wasn’t felt. Without him, the Roca Team are unbeaten. In March they are yet to lose and are on a 10-game unbeaten run. Seven of those wins have come without James.

The latest was one of the more comfortable victories, with the game easily wrapped up before the final buzzer (90-79), which marked Monaco’s official qualification for this season’s playoffs.

Target top four

Despite what Obradovic termed “a great achievement,” which allows them to “dream big,” there was an underlying sense that this is a job half-done. “We want home-court advantage. We need to keep the rhythm with this tough schedule and still perform in the Euroleague,” said Obradovic. The Serbian coach told Monaco Life, “There are goals and I repeat them every day. I believe in everyday processes to achieve them. I’m always on the ground, but dreaming big.”

Monaco are currently fourth in the Euroleague standings, and should they remain there, they will secure that all-important home-court advantage, which perhaps cost them during last season’s play-off defeat at the hands of Olympiacos.

Mike James set for return

Obradovic also provided an update on the returning James and reflected on his time away from the club. “He’s back in practice, he’s not out of shape. It’s not easy to put him back in the game. It’s a bit different now. The chemistry should be different. He has to understand that it’s not just about helping the team one way; he has to integrate into the team in the best possible way, play basketball, play together, and share the ball. We talk about this a lot,” said Obradovic.

“We need his quality, especially with the games coming up. I believe after these 10 days, we will have more from the player. He is ready to play in the next game. This break could have been good for him,” the Roca Team coach concluded.

There is an element of the unknown regarding James’ return. He is undoubtedly the most talented individual in the Roca Team’s ranks, but in his absence, the team have produced some of their best collective basketball. Obradovic will hope that his return helps – and doesn’t hinder – their current momentum.

New Palais des Congrès to be built on Port Lympia in Nice

palais des congres nice

As one comes down, a new congress centre will soon go up on the port of Nice. The deadline for completion is the UN One Ocean Summit in 2025.

After a few legal hurdles, the demolition of the Palais Acropolis, Nice’s former exhibition centre on the Promenade du Paillon, has begun. Now it has been announced that it will be replaced with a sleek new building on the Quai Infernet of Port Lympia.

Nice will be working to a tight deadline. In June 2025, the city will host the United Nations One Ocean Summit. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi, who broke the news of the new project in the port, has gone as far as to tell local press that it was the UN who “insisted the summit take place in the port”.

More than 20,000 delegates from around the world are expected to attend the event over four days. The new congress centre, which is currently without an official name, is promising an auditorium larger in size to the Salle Apollon at the Palais Acropolis – an increase to 2,400 seats – but where all of these attendees will be housed during official events remains to be fully addressed.

Nearly 10,000m2 of space on the port is to be fully redeveloped. According to Estrosi, the financial burden of the project, a difficult topic at the moment in Nice, will fall almost entirely on the UN, who he claims will soak up 90% of costs.

Mutual projects to the east and west

It had previously been suggested that the Grand Arénas area of Nice, located close to the airport and the Eco Vallée, would be the chosen site for a new exhibition centre. It appears that these plans will still go ahead, but will be complemented by the port development: “One to the west with the future exhibition centre instead of the MIN Fleurs [and] one to the east dedicated to congresses,” Estrosi told local press.

Video: Prince Albert welcomes ‘No More Time – Oceans are Life’ sculpture to Foundation headquarters

Prince Albert was joined by a number of prestigious guests on Friday for the official unveiling of a monumental sculpture by Paola Buratto Caovilla entitled ‘No More Time – Oceans are Life’.

As part of Monaco Ocean Week, selected guests gathered alongside Prince Albert II, Olivier Wenden – CEO of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and the artist Paola Buratto Caovilla, to celebrate her impactful sculpture.

Made of resin and acrylic paint, the artist’s multi-coloured globe represents our planet and shines the spotlight on the oceans. It also has a universal message to share: there can be no future if we do not care for the environment, and protecting the oceans must be a top priority.

‘No More Time – Oceans are Life’ stems from what Paola has seen and done, but there is more to it than just experience: “In life, we must endeavour to leave our children and those who come after us a better world, where they can find happiness,” says the Italian artist. “The only message that counts is the one that tells us we must be environmentally friendly and sustainable.”

The artist says that she wanted to display ‘No More Time – Oceans are Life’ in the gardens of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and unveil it during Monaco Ocean Week so that she could show her support for the foundation’s work and play her part in the week of ocean conservation efforts, especially those involving young people.

Princesses Maria Chiara and Maria Carolina of Bourbon Two Sicilies are the Ambassadors of the  initiative, tying in with their dedication to humanitarian causes.

Paola Buratto Caovilla is a descendant of the artist Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682-1754) and has a creative workshop in Veneto, Italy. She is also the author of six books that carry the common theme of embracing nature and sustainability in our lives, asking “What is the point of living comfortably if we’re not making the world a better place for those who’ll be here after we’re gone?”.

The sculpture, and its message “Oceans are Life”, will be on display until 30th April 2023.

France calls off King Charles’ visit amid rising national tensions

KING CHARLES FRANCE

King Charles’ first official state visit as monarch has been derailed due to mass strikes and protests across France. It will be postponed to a later date, according to the office of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Whether it was societal pressure or fears that the ongoing pension reform protests, which took a violent turn with an arson attack on the city hall of Bordeaux, a planned stop on the tour, the result is the same.

Following a reported private telephone conversation between Macron and King Charles, the rather drastic step of postponing the visit was made on the morning of Friday 24th March, just two days before the 74-year-old monarch was due to travel to France.

Pension reform protestors were particularly irked by plans to host a banquet at the former royal palace of Versailles, calling it out of touch with current sentiments felt across France. Another problem arose when CGT union members at the Mobilier National, an institution responsible for providing flags and furniture at public occasions, outright refused to provide any assistance in the preparations for the visit, including the red carpet expected.

A statement from the Palais de l’Élysée, Macron’s official residence, said the visit would be rescheduled “as soon as possible” and “in conditions that correspond our friendly relations”.

The visit had been touted as a chance for the UK and France to renew ties following recent years of tension in the run-up to and wake of Brexit.

Problems at the pumps: where to find fuel during shortages

fuel shortage france

Motorists are the latest victims of the pension reform protests as fuel shortages cause long lines at the pumps. Here’s how to find service stations with fuel available.

The pension reform protests continue to create chaos. Petrol shortages are being felt all over France, with the southeast, including the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var, being exceptionally hard hit.

To try and ease some of the pressure and to alert motorists to which service stations have supplies, the government has put out an interactive map that lists all stations and informs the public about not just availability, but prices as well.

As a reminder, the current conditions have prompted some local authorities, including those on the French Riviera, to limit the average driver to 30 litres per visit.
