New AS Monaco Rugby clubhouse takes pride of place at Stade Prince Héréditaire Jacques

Just in time to welcome the club’s growing member numbers for its end of year festivities, AS Monaco Rugby officially inaugurated its new clubhouse over the weekend.

On Sunday 17th December, AS Monaco Rugby opened the doors to its brand-new clubhouse at the Stade Prince Héréditaire Jacques in Beausoleil, and players, members and fans turned out in droves to explore the pitch side facility.

The day kicked off early at 9am with the Rugby Challenge Solidaire before Father Christmas emerged to greet the youngest players as the clock struck 12pm. All were then invited to enjoy a festive buffet inside the new clubhouse ahead of two scheduled games against Saint Marcellin Sport.

Both the home youth side and AS Monaco Rugby’s senior side secured healthy victories. For the flagship team, the 33-13 win now puts them at the top of the standings, tied with the US Montmélian in the Fédérale 2 French rugby union club championship division. As they headed off the pitch for some much deserved refreshments, the players and coaching staff received praise and applause from all who had gathered on the grand opening day.

EU is “better prepared” to face health risks in future according to new official reports

Lessons have been learnt following the COVID-19 pandemic, say two new reports commissioned by the European Union, which put preparedness against “cross-border health threats” and the state of EU health care systems under the microscope.

The European Union is determined to not be caught off-guard by any potential future pandemics in the way it was during the COVID-19 crisis, and, to that end, recently commissioned two complementary reports into the State of Health Preparedness and the State of Health in the EU.

STATE OF HEALTH PREPAREDNESS

The State of Health Preparedness is to become a yearly report with the purpose of mapping “EU actions taken since the pandemic to address cross-border health threats”, such as the Regulation 2022/2371 on Serious Cross-Border Threats to Health that was enacted last year and has become “the backbone of the EU’s health security architecture”.

This initial report covers in detail the nearly €100 million of investment made in the EU4Health programme to improve “national surveillance systems” in member states as well as vaccination programmes, antimicrobial resistance, which “causes over 35,000 deaths a year in Europe”, threats from animal diseases, and the rising health impacts of climate change.

The report, which can be found here, also includes information on the EU’s efforts to establish an “international agreement on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response”.

STATE OF HEALTH IN THE EU

The 2023 State of Health in the EU report presents the health profiles of 29 nations and their health care systems, which are available in English here

This report’s mission is to “look at how health systems across the Union are performing, and highlight three key findings that need to be addressed in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic”. These are mental health, health inequalities and the “importance of continued investment in health”.

On the topic of mental health, the report recommends that reforms that “cover de-stigmatisation, prevention, treatment and reintegration are needed across all member states”.

Regarding health inequalities across the EU, the report acknowledges that not all countries in the bloc are able to provide the same level and quality of care, with particular reference to cancer “as a key priority area to address”.

One area covered by the investment section of the report is the European Health Data Space, a concept proposed by the European Commission in May 2022 that could “help to unleash the full potential of health data and empower EU citizens through better digital access and control of their health information”.

“ESSENTIAL TOOLS”

“The COVID-19 pandemic put unprecedented strain on our societies, economies and health systems,” said Stella Kyriakides, EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, following the release of the two reports. “Our response to it was the foundation of a strong European Health Union that is better prepared for future health crises and delivers high quality healthcare for every citizen. It is vital that we continue to regularly monitor our progress on health preparedness and building resilient health systems. The State of Health Preparedness and the State of Health in the EU reports are essential tools to do exactly that, and provide important guidance for our health policy, with the priority goal of protecting our citizens.”

Global music icon Marc Anthony joins E1’s star-studded ownership roster

Marc Anthony, the chart-topping, award-winning, highest selling salsa singer and minority owner of the NFL team the Miami Dolphins, is adding a new title to his trophy cabinet: owner of the new E1 Team Miami, as part of the UIM E1 World Championship.

Anthony’s E1 Team Miami will be on the startline at the first ever E1 event next February in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, alongside other teams owned by some of the world’s biggest celebrity names, among them Tom Brady, Rafael Nadal, Steve Aoki, Sergio Perez, Didier Drogba, and Virat Kohli.

Beyond the excitement on the racecourse, E1’s commitment to sustainable marine practices, says Anthony, aligns with his dedication to preserving Miami’s waters for future generations.

“I have always been fascinated by all things nautical,” said Marc Anthony in a statement. “Water is the essence of life, and as the human population approaches the limits of what the planet can sustain, it is time to cherish water for the essential value it has as an enabler of life. I am thrilled to join forces with E1 to welcome to the dawn a new era of competition and a new standard of race excellence, and I am looking forward to embarking on a journey that has never been witnessed before, an era where passion is a given and winning is a must.”

Up to 10 teams will compete in the inaugural UIM E1 World Championship season, each battling it out to secure the coveted E1 title of Champions Of The Water. Each team will choose two pilots to share driving duties throughout the event, with regulations mandating each team to select a mixed gender pilot line-up to ensure equal opportunities in the sport.

Marc Anthony and his company Magnus are not just entering the racecourse for season one; Magnus is also set to host E1 in the United States in season two, with a dazzling event scheduled for Miami that includes a fan village, and a star-studded concert featuring prominent artists.

Monaco is set to host the UIM E1 World Championship in July 2024.

Beausoleil opens ice rink on the Place de la Libération

ice rink beausoleil

Those missing the ice rink in Port Hercule will be glad to hear that Beausoleil has opened its very own on the Place de la Libération this Christmas.

Last year in Monaco, officials decided against setting up an ice skating rink at the Stade Nautique Rainier III, blaming rising energy costs, and instead plumped for a roller skating station. This Christmas, the Principality is trying out another alternative: the Sports Village.

But ice skating, an activity synonymous with Christmastime and the holidays, is ever popular with revellers of all ages and the French commune of Beausoleil, which borders Monaco to the north, is picking up where the Principality left off with a rink of its own in the heart of the town.

Opening hours

Prior to the school holidays starting, the rink will be open from 4.30pm to 8pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, the rink will be open from 1.30pm to 8pm.

Once the holidays officially begin, the hours will be extended from 1.30pm to 8pm every day of the week, and until 10pm on each Friday in December. The rink will be closing early at 6.30pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Skating sessions cost €4 for adults living in Beausoleil and €7 for non-resident adults. Discounted tickets for under 16s, pensioners, RSA recipients and the unemployed cost €2.50 for locals and €4 for non-residents.

The rink was inaugurated on Friday 15th December and will remain open until Sunday 7th December.

Basketball: Defeated against Instabul’s Fenerbahçe, Roca Team shines against Roanne

After a defeat away from home against Istanbul’s Fenerbahçe in the EuroLeague, the Roca Team returned to winning form against Roanne to take the team’s 15th victory in the Betclic Elite this season.

In the EuroLeague clash on 15th December, which was held at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul, Fenerbahçe emerged victorious (86-74).

Fenerbahçe’s control of the boards, outrebounding AS Monaco 47 to 28, and their ball movement, resulting in 21 assists, underscored their exceptional teamwork. Nigel Hayes-Davis delivered a stellar performance and was crucial in leading Fenerbahçe to victory.

Despite AS Monaco’s efforts, highlighted by Mike James’ noteworthy 24-point performance, Fenerbahçe’s consistent dominance in shooting and strategic gameplay secured their triumph

AS Monaco crushes Roanne’s resistance

Back home in Monaco just two days later, the Roca Team rallied to deliver a resounding 116-73 victory over Roanne in the Betclic Elite domestic league on 17th December.

Monaco’s precision shooting, particularly with a remarkable 57% from beyond the arc and 69% on two-point attempts, showcased their all-around excellence.

Matthew Strazel orchestrated the offence with 23 points and eight assists, earning an eye-popping evaluation of 30, and Monaco’s unselfish play was evident in their 29 assists, compared to Roanne’s 17.

Roanne, despite a commendable effort, struggled to contain Monaco’s offensive onslaught. Jordan Tucker’s 18 points and Yannis Morin’s eight rebounds were highlights for Roanne, but they were overshadowed by Monaco’s collective skills.

Shunned Claude Palmero vows to take his case against Monaco to the European Court of Human Rights

The former Administrator of Properties for Prince Albert II of Monaco, Claude Palmero, who stepped down from his long-held position in the summer, is reportedly set to take his case against the Principality to the European Court of Human Rights.

Three months on from a ruling by Monaco’s Supreme Court that rejected Palmero’s fight back against his dismissal and his demands that Prince Albert pay him €1 million in compensation, the Monaco Matin has published comments from his lawyers that indicate the disgraced civil servant will “imminently” take his cause to the European Court of Human Rights.

Palmero had been appointed to the task of managing the personal fortune of the Prince, the Princely Family and that of the Sovereign House back in 2001, during the reign of the late Prince Rainier III. He continued working closely with the Princely Family and Prince Albert until June 2023.

Then the Palais Princier de Monaco released an official statement announcing: “Prince Albert II has accepted the decision of Mr. Claude Palmero to assert his pension rights from 12th June. Aged 67, Mr Palmero was the Administrator of the Property of the Prince and the Sovereign House since 2001. The Sovereign Prince declares: ‘I would like to thank Mr. Claude Palmero for the professionalism he has shown evidenced throughout the years spent in the administration of my property and the Sovereign House.’”

His retirement – or unfair removal from the job, as reportedly argued by Palmero and his lawyers – was linked to the so-called Rock Files, or Dossiers du Rocher, that have caused significant controversy in the Principality in recent years.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

According to the Monaco Matin, on Monday 18th December Palmero was heard and rejected by the Supreme Court of Monaco for a second time. The newspaper has reported that Palmero’s case in this second instance took particular aim at two magistrates appointed to the court, Stéphane Braconnier and Philippe Blacher, over the summer.

In comments published online by the Monaco Matin, Palmero’s lawyers say their appointment “violates the Monegasque Constitution as well as the standards of independence and impartiality required by the Council of Europe”.

A statement from the former President of the Bar of Paris, Pierre-Olivier Sûr, who is believed to be representing Palmero, was also published by the Monaco Matin.

“VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL COMMITTMENTS”

“The Strasbourg Court [also known as the European Court of Human Rights] will be seized before the end of the year to challenge the very questionable order which was issued on 18th December 2023 by the Supreme Court of Monaco, and more generally to obtain the condemnation of the Principality before the whole of Europe for violation of its international commitments,” reportedly reads the statement.

Sûr’s statement adds that the decision to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights was also made “to force the Principality to respect in the future the principles of separation of powers, independence of justice and access to the law”.

“This will force the Principality to undertake a comprehensive constitutional reform which will finally make it possible to fight effectively against corruption, as Claude Palmero has been striving to do consistently for many years,” concludes the published statement.

No official statement has been made by the Prince’s Palace.
