Prince Albert whips up Monegasque dish for French TV

Prince Albert II is a man of many talents and interests, and if his upcoming appearance on TF1’s Petits Plats en Équilibre alongside TV chef Laurent Mariotte is anything to go by, it can now be said that he is also pretty handy in the kitchen.

Ahead of its public broadcast in early June, TF1 has released some photographs of the two men cooking an authentically Monegasque meal side by side.

Dressed in an apron bearing the Principality’s coat of arms, Prince Albert is said to have brought along and prepped a range of ingredients for the cooking show, which celebrates traditional and healthy dishes, that were harvested from his own very garden potager at Roc Angel.

The 100% plant-based meal, a jardinière à la monégasque, is constructed of artichokes, spring onions, radishes, chard and peas, and is accompanied by a pesto made with radish tops. Viewers will be able to tune in at 12.55pm on 3rd June to watch the Prince in action and try their hand at this Grimaldi family favourite at home.

In an interview with Point de Vue, Laurent Mariotte said, “He knew the show perfectly. I met a man who is very attached to seasonal products, a true signature of our programme.”

Prince Albert visited the TF1 studios during his recent visit to Paris, where he was honoured with the Commander of the Order of Agricultural Merit insignia by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Almine Rech Gallery to exhibit Michael Kagan’s ‘Victory Lap’

In the run-up to the Monaco Grand Prix, the Almine Rech Gallery will be playing host to the latest Michael Kagan solo exhibition, ‘Victory Lap’, which depicts Formula 1 drivers in full kit as they prepare to hit the track.

American artist Michael Kagan has made a career out of capturing the essence of real-life superheroes, painting astronauts, fighter jet pilots and now Formula 1 drivers.

His paintings, known for their big, bold brushwork and deeply expressive, high-octane content, have taken him beyond niche fans of his chosen subjects to a broad-based audience who appreciate the striking balance he makes between realism and representational art.

His latest collection delves into the rarefied realm of the Formula 1 driver and features the superstars of the track, including Monaco’s own Charles Leclerc, who is painted on a 40cm x 30cm canvas in oils, as well as a rendition of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, also in oil, on a 61cm x 61cm canvas.

“The subjects of his spectacular paintings and sculptures are superhuman characters who confront all obstacles and fears in an obsessive and passionate quest for records, speed, excellence and victory,” says Simon de Pury, the Swiss art dealer and auctioneer. “They put their lives on the edge and galvanise millions of motorsport fans around the world. Their multi-coloured helmets and racing outfits further emphasise their superhero status.”

Victory Lap will be on display at the Almine Rech Gallery on Avenue de la Costa from 22nd May to 22nd June.

Mon’Arc en Ciel launches new website for the local LGBTQ+ community

Coinciding with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, local association Mon’Arc en Ciel has launched a new website dedicated to raising awareness about LGBTQ+ rights, ending discrimination and offering support to LGBTQ+ people in the Principality.

Every year, 17th May marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. The date is particularly significant in Monaco in 2024 as it coincides with the unveiling of a brand-new website spearheaded by Mon’Arc en Ciel – ‘My Rainbow’ in English – that is seeking to boost awareness of LGBTQ+ rights in the Principality as well as act as a vehicle for support and education.

Founded in 2023 by a group of young people who felt compelled to champion positive changes to the rights and protections afforded to their community, a statement published on Mon’Arc en Ciel’s new website reads, “Young LGBTQ+ people in Monaco must be able to grow up in an environment where they feel safe and valued, without fear of discrimination or rejection.”

Monaco’s record on rights and laws regarding homosexuality is relatively good. The nation has been historically very tolerant of same-sex relations, which were decriminalised way back in 1793. Same-sex partnerships via co-habitation agreements such as the Contrat de Vie Commune and PACS have been legally accepted since 2020.

Discrimination safeguards do not specifically single out people with certain gender identities or sexual orientations, but they cover general civil rights, such as equality before the law, due process, privacy rights, right to practice any religion and free speech. The Principality has made hate speech a crime and has adopted anti-harassment and anti-discrimination laws to protect all.

Furthermore, the National Guard, the closest thing to armed forces in Monaco, recruits people of all sexual orientations.

Though the protections are significant, there are areas the LGBTQ+ community would like to see improved. For example, same-sex marriage is still not recognised and nor can same-sex couples adopt a child in the Principality. There is no right to change gender legally and access to IVF for lesbians remains prohibited.

Mairie de Monaco to hold eco mural painting marathon for World Environment Day

world environment day

In celebration of World Environment Day next month, the Mairie de Monaco has announced a creative event that will blend art with environmental awareness: a mural painting marathon.

The event, which will be held at the A Fàbrica workshop in Monaco’s Parc Princesse Antoinette, will coincide with World Environment Day on Wednesday 5th June.

Five topics have been chosen for the five murals, each representing a specific environmental issue. From climate to composting, the circular economy, the oceans and the water cycle, participants aged 10 and up will be invited to add their artistic touch to the canvases, drawing on inspiration from the world around them and the interactive and educational workshops that will be run alongside the painting sessions.

Spaces are limited so the Mairie de Monaco is asking interested parties to get in touch ahead of time to reserve a spot. Contact environnement@mairie.mc for more information.
