Colombian Artist Juan Carlo Callejas exhibition at CREM

Until June 5th, CREM will present the exhibition ‘Convergences’ by Colombian artist Juan Carlos Callejas in collaboration with the Association Monegasque Iberoamericaine (AMI). 

By attending and acquiring artworks, visitors can not only appreciate the art but also make a tangible contribution to AMI’s ongoing projects in Latin America, as a portion of the proceeds from the art sales will be donated to support their initiatives.

Juan Carlos Callejas, an influential artist born in 1979 in Cali, Colombia, and currently based in Berlin, Germany, has dedicated his life and work to reflecting his hometown’s vibrant streets and dynamic culture. His profound passion for art and philosophy has been the driving force behind his creative endeavours.

Having delved into the representation of the human figure in an urban environment from an early age, Callejas’ artwork, characterised by vibrant and diverse techniques, narrates the stories of people, their connections, and the rich tapestry of life found on the corners of Cali’s streets. His work has garnered international acclaim and has been displayed in prestigious art galleries and exhibitions across Spain, the United States, Portugal, China, Qatar, and now the Principality of Monaco.

The centrepiece of the exhibition, ‘Convergences’, offers an immersive experience that transcends mere visual observation. It beckons the audience to explore the interplay between observing the world and crafting our own reality. Through everyday scenes from Berlin, Colombia, and other locations, Callejas magnifies the profundity of the simple and mundane, unveiling the enigma that underpins the ordinary and shapes our existence. With masterful craftsmanship, diverse materials, and contemporary painting techniques, he underscores the depth and intricacy of human experience. The exhibition is a universal exploration of the human dilemma, transcending cultural, geographical, and social confines.

Basketball: Jubilant Roca Team through to Betclic Elite finals

AS Monaco Basket have secured their place in the upcoming Betclic Elite finals with a triumphant win over Bourg-en-Bresse. The side will face Paris Basketball as the two teams battle it out to become the Champions of France.  

The Roca Team concluded a four-game semi-finals series with another win against Bourg-en-Bresse on Thursday 30th May, which ended 71-76. 

The Monaco team’s place in the final never looked in doubt; AS Monaco Basket achieved a straight-win of games throughout the campaign. 

This marks the third consecutive season that AS Monaco Basket have made the final stage, which they won in 2023 to become the reigning champions of French basketball’s premier league.

Their rivals at the other end of the court will be Paris Basketball, who beat Lyon’s LDLC ASVEL over the weekend.

Roca Team might still be licking their wounds somewhat after a disappointing end to their EuroLeague season – the side only just missed out on a place in the Final Four – but the players and their coach, Saša Obradović, are now able to fully focus on the French league and title.

“Now we need to prepare for the final,” said AS Monaco Basket point guard Elie Oboko following the recent match against Bourg-en-Bresse. “Regardless of the team we will face, we must give our all to finish the season with a trophy.” 

Obradović will be hoping that the few days of rest before the first match in the finals series, which begins on Tuesday 4th June, will be enough to allow his injured players time to recuperate.

“Our best players are not in top form,” said the Serbian coach on Thursday 30th May. “I hope we will find our rhythm and get our injured players back in good condition for the final. It’s the third consecutive time we’re in the final, despite all our problems. We didn’t make it to the EuroLeague Final Four, but we’re having a good season.”

Monaco Art Week: Moretti Gallery to host Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein’s ‘And There Was Light’

German painter and European royalty Princess Ingeborg of Schleswig-Holstein will be presenting her new exhibition And There Was Light at Monaco’s Moretti Fine Art Gallery this July.  

Coinciding with Monaco Art Week, which will be held between 2nd and 7th July, Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein, as the painter is formally styled, will be exhibiting her And There Was Light collection at the gallery on Avenue de la Costa from 3rd until 26th July.  

Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein’s abstract pieces are a riot of colour and emotion that appeal to her audience’s sense of self, and her latest collection transcends this feeling, infusing it with religious art of the past from masters such as Simone dei Crocifissi, Barnaba da Modena and Arrigo di Niccolò. 

“The works of Ingeborg zu Schleswig-Holstein in this exhibition have no explicit representational content or reference points outside of themselves, eschewing traditional allegorical strategies as pathways to transcendence,” says a representative for Moretti Fine Art Gallery. “Instead of representing metaphysical concepts descriptively, these paintings may instead be read as enactments of such notions – lyrical reachings – out beyond the constrained experiential possibilities of the everyday.”  

The Princess’ unique approach to painting is on full display here and shows how she has developed her style since her early days in Hamburg, then at Andy Warhol’s factory, and later at her own studio in New York’s Soho neighbourhood during the 1970s and 80s.  

The show also has a charitable aspect, with part of the proceeds being donated to child protection and welfare organisation AMADE, which comes under the patronage of Princess Caroline of Hanover.  

A vernissage will be held at the Moretti Fine Art Gallery on 2nd July from 6pm to 9pm.

Nice Airport partners with Lilium and Urban V to create Europe’s first regional vertiport

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport has announced its plans to introduce a new network of fully electric vertical take-off and landing craft by 2026 and thus become the first regional airport in Europe to host the innovative vertiport concept.  

Billed as a fast, convenient and environmentally friendly new method of travelling, the innovative vertiport network plans unveiled by Nice Côte d’Azur Airport in conjunction with Lilium and Urban V could revolutionise regional travel in the Riviera.  

This partnership with Lilium, the Germany-based developer of the first all-electric vertical transport jet, also known as eVTOL, and Italian vertiport network company UrbanV, sets in motion a pioneering project to make next-generation regional transportation a reality by 2026.  

Nice Airport, the second busiest in France with over 14 million passengers each year, intends to set up a regional vertiport network linking the city to Monaco, Saint Tropez and Cannes. Additional routes to Marseille, Sophia-Antipolis and Aix-en-Provence are also in the works, with confirmation due by the end of 2024.  

The initial network is anticipated to be operational by the year 2026 and will be a first in Europe.  

“This collaboration with Lilium together with our subsidiary UrbanV marks an important step in the transformation and decarbonisation of regional air mobility,” says Franck Goldnadel, Chairman of the Board at Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur. “Our territory offers a unique opportunity to fly over the sea to directly connect the main economic, cultural or tourist destinations. A complementary alternative to the helicopter, the eVTOL has its place in the air transport offered from Nice Côte d’Azur, laboratory of the airport of tomorrow, second platform in France and gateway to and exit from a landlocked territory.” 

The new system will be a serious boon to the airport’s eco-credibility. Nice Airport has vowed to hit carbon neutrality by 2030 and these zero-emission transport options fit right in the scheme, doing double duty by replacing polluting cars as well as cutting the long travel times typically required to get to other destinations in the area.  

“As a truly European company based in Munich, Germany, with flight testing in Spain and with nascent roots in France, Lilium is extremely proud to be able to assist in the creation of the first regional eVTOL network in the south of France and the first commercially viable network in the EU,” says Sebastien Borel, CCO of Lilium. “We see an enormous potential in this region and cannot wait to see our Lilium Jet fly there soon.”

Opéra de Monte-Carlo’s Cecilia Bartoli unveils 2024/25 season programme

The Opéra de Monte-Carlo’s 2024/25 schedule is a masterpiece in itself, featuring works from the world’s most celebrated composers and infusing great pieces from the past with a wholly modern edge that is becoming the hallmark of the opera house under Cecilia Bartoli.  

Cecilia Bartoli’s vision for the Opéra de Monte-Carlo grows stronger every year. For her third season here, she has put together a line-up of 14 projects and 30 performances, including five staged productions, three operatic concerts and six concert events that include a gala with a repertoire that will cover more than five centuries of works from some of the musical world’s greatest stars.  

During the opening month of the season, from late October through November, the spotlight will be focused exclusively on Giacomo Puccini, with renditions of La Rondine, La Bohème, Tosca and a lyrical gala entitled Viva Puccini. This latter event, which will commemorate the centenary of the composer’s death and feature superstar tenor Jonas Kaufman, will be held on 17th November. Tickets can be reserved here. 

December will begin with A Tribute to Sinatra, a concert at which Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo will be showcasing how his talents reach beyond the realms of traditional opera as he forays into the world of pop music in a touching homage to the late icon Frank Sinatra.  

The month continues with the Donizetti classic L’Elisir d’Amore over four performances that will span the holiday season, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio on 21st December.  

Mozart takes centre stage in January, with Don Giovanni and four showings of La Clemenza di Tito. February sees a recital by French tenor Benjamin Bernheim, followed by four performances of Wagner’s Das Rheingold.  

Rounding out the season in March are Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde – Act II, Vespers for the Blessed Virgin by Monteverdi and a double bill of Ravel’s L’Heure Espagnole and L’Enfant et les Sortileges.
