Climbers Against Cancer make generous donation to CSM paediatric cancer unit

The Centre Scientifique de Monaco has welcomed a cheque of £10,000 from the Climbers Against Cancer. It is a generous donation that will help further the centre’s work fighting paediatric brain cancer.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 400,000 children develop cancer each year worldwide. The most common types are leukaemia, lymphoma and brain cancer, but the causes for the development of cancer in young patients are far less known.

CLIMBERS AGAINST CANCER

To mark the 10th anniversary of Climbers Against Cancer’s (CAC) founding by John Ellison, who launched the association after learning he had terminal cancer, the group is this year making 10 donations of £10,000 to cancer research programmes, and the Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM) is among those beneficiaries.

“We are resolutely looking to the future and our ambition is to double our fundraising,” said the CAC’s Sheila McCarron. “We want to reach even more members of the generous community of climbers and well beyond, in particular to support research, allow a better understanding of the development of cancers, [and] thus leading to greater effectiveness of treatments and the deployment of new therapeutic strategies.”

CSM’S EFFORTS

The CSM’s medical biology team, headed up by Dr. Vincent Picco, will use the funding to study paediatric brain cancers with a focus on the formation of tumours in children, some of whom are only a few months old. This line of research could help create a new approach and increased understanding of the disease in young people, and ultimately save lives.

“The causes of the onset of adult cancers and paediatric cancers are radically different,” says Dr Picco. “However, children are systematically treated with techniques developed for adults, notably causing often catastrophic long-term side effects. Our team develops study models that make it possible to simulate paediatric brain cancers more faithfully in order to better understand them and develop treatments specifically adapted to the particular characteristics of these diseases.”

In the decade since the CAC began, it has helped raise over a half million pounds for research programmes in 14 countries around the world.

The presentation of the funds took place on 19th June at the CSM in the presence of the president of the Monaco Alpine Club, Johnathan Rieth.

Karsten Warholm competing at the Herculis Meeting

400m hurdle record-holder and reigning Olympic champion Karsten Warholm has confirmed his presence at next month’s Herculis Meeting in Monaco, where history could be made.

Warholm will be the overwhelming favourite in the 400m hurdles next month, after confirming his presence at the Herculis Meeting at the Stade Louis II on 21st July. The Norwegian athlete made an explosive return to competition last Thursday, recording the second-best time of his career (46.52 seconds), and the fourth-quickest time in history.

This world record holder set the Herculis Meeting record (47.08 seconds) back in 2021, and given the form he has displayed at the beginning of the summer season, he will be backed to set a new one when he races against Warholm.

The Frenchman finished second in Munich last year, behind Warholm, and is constantly improving, registering a 48.13-second time in Oslo last week.

With both athletes pushing each other, there is a good chance of witnessing history in the 400m hurdles at the Stade Louis II next month. Tickets start from just €15.

Star-studded cast to play at inaugural Glam Foot competition

Manchester United's Anthony Martial playing against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League

Anthony Martial, Tiémoué Bakayoko, Franck Kessié, André Ayew and Éric Bailly will all participate in the first edition of the Glam Foot five-a-side tournament, which will take place in Cap d’Ail next week.

The season may only just have concluded, but some of the most recognisable players in the game will descend on the Principality to maintain their fitness levels during the off-season.

The Glam Foot five-a-side tournament, to be hosted at the Espace Saint Antoine on Tuesday 27th June, has been co-organised by Martial, the honorary president of Glam Foot, and the ubiquitous sporting figure of Louis Ducruet, the president of the Barbagiuans of Monaco.

Martial, a former AS Monaco forward who now leads the line for Manchester United, has devoted himself to numerous charitable projects over the years, and the inaugural Glam Foot event marks a continuation of that work. The four teams featured at the tournament will each represent a different association, helping raise money for several charitable causes.

Mobilising fanbases

“Ideally, I’d prefer to live in a world where everything goes well everywhere and for everyone. But that’s not the case, and that’s why associations are necessary. You have to help them, and as long as they need me, I’ll be there,” says Martial.

The Barbagiuans, Glam Foot, JPK Healthcare and Or Bleu associations will all fight to win the competition in the name of their respective charitable causes, but the funds raised during the course of the tournament will be split equally between the various associations.

The event will also utilise social media influencers to mobilise their fan bases to support their respective causes. Sisik, who has 334,000 followers on Instagram, will represent the Or Bleu association, and whilst he feels “honoured to play with the stars of world football”, he remains focused on the core objective.

“Taking part in this kind of sporting event is bound to help raise the profile of the fight we are leading. It’s a real opportunity,” he says.

To see the stars in action, many of whom currently play for top clubs around Europe, fans just need to turn up on the day. There is no pre-event ticketing so keen fans are advised to turn up at around 12.30pm to ensure access to and a seat at the Espace Saint Antoine, which is found just over the French border in the town of Cap d’Ail. Naturally, there will be limited places available.

Monaco sees record number of new build sales in first quarter of 2023

Real estate in Monaco has hit another record, with new apartment sales reaching €400 million in Q1 2023 for the first time in the history of the Principality.

According to the latest economics report by statistics group IMSEE, Monaco’s economy has bounced back from the pandemic with nearly every category seeing an uptick in the first quarter of 2023.

Trade has surpassed 2019 levels to hit €900,000, revenue is up by €600,000, and the number of private sector jobs rose by 5% over 2022.

SCORCHING PROPERTY MARKET

But the most impressive statistics in the report relate to the real estate sector.

There were 12 sales of new-build properties in the first quarter of 2023 – twice as many as in Q1 2022. They achieved a sales total of more than €400 million, an “absolute record for a first quarter”, according to IMSEE.

More than 80% of these transactions were for apartments that were in the process of being delivered.

Meanwhile, the resale market was stable with 96 transactions, an increase of 3.2% on Q1 2022, to reach €563 million in value. This figure is 12.4% more than that achieved in the same period last year, and has not been seen since Q1 2016.

Only five properties were sold for less than one million euros, a historically low level, while the rest exceeded €10 million.

Monaco in Brussels

A multi-faceted group representing the Monaco government, Monaco Private Label, the Monaco Economic Board, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer Group and the Association of Financial Activities visited Brussels between 13th and 14th June. Its mission, headed by Interministerial Delegate for Attractiveness and Digital Transition Frédéric Genta, was to promote the Principality abroad, and the group met with key players from the diplomatic and consular corps as well as a network of “influential” Belgian decision-makers to help forge stronger ties between the two nations.

“For this first international mission, we are delighted that all the active forces dedicated to the attractiveness and influence of the Principality collaborated closely in order to bring these very high-level meetings to a successful conclusion,” said Monaco’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, Frédéric Labarrère.

A meeting of Monaco’s financial crime task force

After a Moneyval assessment called on Monaco to “intensify efforts” to step up financial crime investigations at the start of this year, as reported by Monaco Life, the Principality moved swiftly to create a task force to do just that. A meeting of the First College of members was held on 15th June. On the agenda was the implementation of the national action plan and a risk assessment report into non-profit organisations.

The 2023 Monaco Finance Durable conference

The third edition of Monaco Finance Durable, which brought together some 60 investment managers representing 30 international financial entities as well as the Monaco Association for Financial Activities and the Monaco Association for Financial Activities, was held on 16th June.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of three MonacoTech start-ups from the fields of medtech and biotech, who were introduced by the incubator’s new director, Sandrine Sauval: Infineis, which has developed an innovative intracranial surgical device; Spheno, whose technology combines 3D video and biomimetics solutions with 3D printing to replace human anatomical subjects used in university education and specialised training; and Coraliotech, a marine biotechnology start-up that regularly collaborates with the Centre Scientifique de Monaco. The work and research of Dr. Vincent Picco into stem cells and brain tumours also garnered interest.
