Italy’s EBT official partner of Monaco Pavilion

Monaco has teamed up with Exclusive Brands as it’s official partner for the Monaco Pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai.

Monaco Inter Expo (MIE) signed the agreement on Friday at the Congress Centre of the Industrial Union of Turin, partnering with Exclusive Brands Torino (EBT) which serves as a network of Piedmontese companies of excellence.

“The partnership between our two institutions, though very different in nature, is based on sharing the same values of internationality, uniqueness, exclusivity and excellence, and on the common will to collaborate towards progress on a global scale,” said Albert Croesi, Director General of MIE, and Giulio Trombetta, General Director of Costadoro SpA, a member of the EBT network and former official partner of the Monaco Pavilion in Milan (Expo 2015) and Astana (Expo 2017). Both men were instrumental in the current deal.

“We are very pleased with Monaco Inter Expo,” said Paolo Pininfarina, EBT President. “For EBT and member companies, this participation in the Expo 2020 Dubai represents a great opportunity for visibility and publicity on an international stage, which will help further improve the performance of the EBT network, which has already experienced an increase in the number of employees in 2019 (from 652 to 783), in sales (+ 37%, or €159.5 million to €218.1 million) and the amount of exports from €81.7 million to €94.9 million.”

ASM lose 0-1 to ASSE

AS Monaco have lost their winning streak, going down 0-1 to Saint-Etienne on the weekend.

The goal that settled the game came just before the hour mark from a move that began with Jean-Eudes Aholou – on loan from Monaco – robbing Benjamin Henrichs inside the Saint-Etienne half of the field and starting a breakaway. The ball came to Romain Hamouma, whose shot was saved by Benjamin Lecomte but Bouanga was there to turn in the rebound (59′).

Saint-Etienne are now unbeaten in five games since Puel was appointed coach a month ago, and have claimed four 1-0 wins in their last five Ligue 1 Conforama outings. They are up to eighth in the table, just a point outside the top three, after this battling victory which owed much to an outstanding display from their young defenders William Saliba and Wesley Fofana as they shut out a previously prolific Monaco attack.

However, this game also hinged on the decision by referee Jerôme Brisard, following a VAR consultation, to overturn a red card shown to Fofana in the 72nd minute for a last-man challenge on substitute Jean-Kévin Augustin because of an extremely marginal offside in the build-up.

Monaco would have had a free-kick on the edge of the area and an extra man for the closing stages, but instead there was a reprieve for Fofana, and it was the visitors who ended the contest with 10 men. On as a substitute, Rubén Aguilar was shown a red card in added time for a last-man challenge on Bouanga as he bore down on goal. It was a second red card of the season for him, and a defeat for Monaco which ends their recent revival – they had claimed five wins in six games in league and cup before this encounter.

The Principality club’s coach, Leonardo Jardim, can point to the absences of key players. Tiémoué Bakayoko, Cesc Fabregas and, perhaps crucially and Islam Slimani were all missing. However, Saint-Etienne were without important members of their side too, including skipper Loïc Perrin and Yann M’Vila.

Bouanga came close twice for the hosts in the first half, when most of the clear chances fell to the away side. They saw Stéphane Ruffier deny Benjamin Henrichs early on, while Adrien Silva fizzed a long-range effort just past and Wissam Ben Yedder fired wide after being set up by Henrichs at the end of a lovely move.

Keita Baldé should have done better than head over from point-blank range after being teed up by Aleksandr Golovin shortly after half-time, and the only goal of the game followed not long after. Golovin and Silva then had chances to equalise for Monaco, but Saint-Etienne also might have added to their lead: Lecomte made one flying save from Hamouma shortly after Bouanga’s goal and then did well to keep out Ryad Boudebouz’s free-kick that came after Aguilar’s late red card.

The Gabon winger had most of the chances for Saint-Etienne before he opened the scoring, and he then provoked the foul by Aguilar which led to the Monaco player being sent off. It was another decisive contribution from a player who also netted the winning penalty in the recent win away at Girondins de Bordeaux.

Saint-Etienne are now unbeaten in seven games in all competitions, five under Puel. They have taken 13 points from the last 15 available in the league. Monaco dropped to 15th on 15 points.

Recharge your laptop by pedalling WeBike at the train station

Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, has inaugurated a “WeBike” terminal that travellers can use to recharge mobile devices by pedalling.

Comprising three stations with comfortable seats, the eco-friendly WeBike allows the user to recharge the battery of their mobile phone, computer or tablet with the strength of their calves.

A ring composed of LEDs serves as an interactive display and gives the level corresponding to the power delivered by the user. As soon as this power is sufficient, the LEDs go green and the power supply is then available to recharge the portable device.

From the first pedal, the bike provides electrical power by exploiting kinetic energy through a dynamo, which is roughly equivalent to a mains connection. With regard to mobile phones, the recharging time by pedalling is equivalent to that of a conventional electric charger. On average, pedalling ten minutes at a moderate pace can recharge 10 to 15 percent of the battery.

“This initiative of the Directorate of Environment is part of the Government’s eco-responsible approach and aims to raise public awareness of alternative energies,” said Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, adding “I encourage the Principality’s companies, in other spaces open to the public, to develop similar initiatives.”

Developed by the Belgian company WeWatt, these terminals were tested in 2012 at the Brussels airport and during the Olympic Games in London, and today can be found in an increasing number of sites in Europe and the US.

Thursday night, at 10:30 pm, the Yersin, the ecological research ship flying the Monegasque flag, left Port Hercules in Monaco for a 3-year journey around the world.

Earlier that evening, the princely couple with their children, Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, attended an invitation-only departure ceremony from the Monaco Yacht Club.

The expedition will be transmitted online with its own media platform. Incredible shots and short videos will be broadcast worldwide to raise awareness about marine environment issues, mainly pollution, acidification, species and coral disappearance.

On a tour of the ship earlier in the month, Captain Jean Dumarais, also one of the ships designers, told Monaco Life: “This is a perfect mix of existing technology that has the least impact on the sea as possible.”

Yersin owners François and Geneviève Fiat spent 30% of their investment on comfort and 70% on technology, which as Mr Dumarais points out, is “the opposite of every other yacht budget”.

Head of Mission Colonel Bruno Philipponnat pointed out, “We don’t have a good understanding of the shores or deep waters. And even though we have the Scientific Centre of Monaco, our scientists need to get out in the field.”

He added: “The Prince is really proud of this project and has followed it every step of the way. He hopes this will encourage other heads of state peers to better protect their seas.”

With several laboratories on board, the vessel is self-sufficient in water, food and electricity thanks to the generators that will accompany the 44 scientists, journalists, crew members who are part of the journey.

The Fiats baptised their ship Yersin after Alexander Yersin (1863-1943) a Swiss physician who discovered the bacillus responsible for the plague because “he did so much for other people,” said Geneviève Fiat. To use his name, the Fiats had to ask his niece for permission. She accepted almost immediately.

A Yersin quote – and the crew’s leitmotiv – “It’s not a life that doesn’t move” is written on the ship’s hull.

The Yersin will return in 2020 after having followed a longitudinal route between the Tropics. Its journey can be followed on social networks or at the Oceanographic Museum where an exhibit will be on display. (Home page image: Axel Bastello/ Palais Princier)
