Football: Is AS Monaco 2.0 taking a step into the unknown?

New manager, new sporting director: the 2023/24 season heralds a new era at AS Monaco, but perhaps one that doesn’t mark such a radical departure from its predecessor. 

As Adi Hütter and Thiago Scuro, the replacements for Philippe Clement and Paul Mitchell took their seats for their first media outing in July, the page had been officially turned. Mitchell’s departure as sporting director had been planned, Clement’s less so. The Belgian paid the price for a poor end to the season, which leaves Les Monégasques without any form of European football this campaign.

A sprinkling of continuity in an evolving project

However, Scuro and Hütter may not represent the most radical of departures from their predecessors. The project hasn’t been torn up and re-written over night. Scuro’s appointment in particular feels like a natural evolution of the project. The Brazilian arrives from Bragantino, and like his predecessor Mitchell, has a history of working within the Red Bull system. Mitchell is conscious of not being a “volatile element” in the project, and through the appointment of Scuro, as well as his assistance throughout the summer, he is hoping to maintain an element of stability.

“We will keep the same philosophy over multiple seasons,” said Scuro upon his presentation. Hütter also shares similarities with Clement, although from the outset, the former has seemingly managed to instil a more dynamic, fluid attacking system. “It is by pressing high that we can put an aggressive style in place,” said Hütter.

The Austrian isn’t, therefore, the most radical of departures from his predecessor either. That is ultimately the plan at Monaco. Following years of turbulence prior to Mitchell’s arrival, there is a need for stability: the calm after the storm.

A perfectible roster

The most important positions filled, Monaco’s attention turned towards creating the optimal conditions to allow Hütter to thrive. Scuro’s South American connections perhaps allowed Jean Lucas’ departure to finally materialise. The Brazilian has been on the transfer list for some time, and he has now joined Santos. However, unlike in some previous seasons, it hasn’t been a revolving door at the club’s Performance Centre in La Turbie this summer.

Much of Monaco’s business was dependent on outgoings. Axel Disasi and Youssouf Fofana were both expected to depart this summer – and for big money. However, the suitors were not necessarily forthcoming. Disasi was on the shortlists of many clubs, but at the top of none of them. Chelsea finally came to the table in August and quickly concluded a deal. The €45m figure received for the France international gives the Principality club some wriggle room in the market, and further arrivals seem imminent. Despite links away, Fofana remains at the club.

Philipp Köhn and Mohammed Salisu are the only two arrivals so far. It is hoped that Köhn will be an improvement on Alexander Nübel, who didn’t always live up to the big occasion. The Swiss goalkeeper’s performances for Monaco in pre-season are a source of optimism.

A reduced margin for error

Salisu has yet to feature for Monaco since his arrival from Southampton, but the Ghanaian international has already accrued considerable experience given his young age. Extra depth is needed in defence, but the foundations have been well-laid for a more solid campaign at the back.

Further reinforcements are being targeted further up the pitch in the midfield and attack, and the need for an extra striker has been made much more pressing in the wake of Breel Embolo’s ACL injury. Monaco will be looking to conclude as much business as early as possible to avoid the slow starts that have plagued previous campaigns.

It is all the more important to start quickly this season. With the reduction of the top flight from 20 to 18 teams, there will be four fewer games, reducing the margin for error. Slow starts will be more severely punished with less time to make up the deficit.

“We want to bring stability.”

The strength of the club’s rivals makes the race for Europe an exciting one. Rennes and Marseille look particularly strong following considerable recruitment this summer, Lille have retained many of their key assets, Nice will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing campaign, whilst Strasbourg, now backed by BlueCo, could represent a fresh challenger. With the expansion of the Champions League from next season, there will be four spots up for grabs in Ligue 1 – as the club prepares to celebrate its cententary in 2024, there is a determination to once again compete on the continent.

Heading into the season, which kicks off against Clermont Foot on Sunday, there is no denying that Monaco are one of the league’s most unknown quantities. But equally, this is no longer a club that will change its entire orientation and philosophy at the drop of a hat – the project is what it is, and it is here to stay.

“My history confirms it. I have always had long relationships with my coaches. We want to bring stability. Working with the same people over the long-term allows you to get results,” said Scuro. Working within the same confines breeds success too. This new duo in many ways are an extension, not a deviation, from the old regime, and that is no bad thing for a club that is looking to reassert itself in France’s elite.

BBQ season: what are the rules in France?

Summers were made for barbeques but the smoke, smells and potential fire hazards can be annoying, and even dangerous, to those not on the receiving end of that juicy burger. Here’s what the rules are to keep everyone happy and safe.

Who doesn’t love a barbeque, especially in the summer? The warm nights and sun-filled days are just right for al fresco dining and cooking outdoors keeps the house, and the cook, from overheating indoors in a stuffy kitchen.

But there are limits to a good thing and the French government has put out some regulations on BBQ-ing to ensure that everyone is safe and undisturbed.

RULES AS THEY STAND

Whether living in a house or an apartment, there are no legal restrictions on the use of barbeques, so long as the user is respectful and isn’t cooking non-stop for days on end. Whilst the law says its ok to occasionally partake, clauses in the terms of a rental contract, or the rules of copropriétés, may limit how and when BBQs are used.

“Some clauses or decrees only restrict the use of barbecues running on charcoal and not those running on gas or electricity, restrict the use of barbecues on balconies or on terraces, and others limit it to certain time slots,” clarifies the government on their website.

Additionally, during certain times of the year, and in regions where the climate is dry and prone to fires, the departmental Prefect or local mayor may decide to ban BBQ-ing as a matter of fire prevention.

WHAT TO DO IF A NEIGHBOUR CROSSES THE LINE

Excessive use of a barbeque can be deemed an “abnormal neighbourhood disturbance”, defined as nuisances that exceed the normal inconveniences of the neighbourhood. In these cases, residents have the right to protest.

In order to prove the barbequing neighbour is an annoyance, proof is required. Blackened walls, ashes flying all over adjoining properties or live embers scorching lawns, furniture or the like are reasons to file a complaint.

There are also legal criteria which must be met. These include the frequency of the act and its duration as well as the intensity, whether it occurs in the day or night, where it occurs – for example in an urban or rural area, and if the regulations in force permit it.

The government suggests the first step is to have a friendly chat with the neighbour and alert them to the inconveniences. If this doesn’t produce a satisfactory solution, send a formal notice by registered mail to move the barbecue or limit its use.

If this still doesn’t work, call the trustee of the copropriété or town hall and get them to alert the offender that they are out of compliance with rules. The last resort, which is time-consuming and costly, is to go to court, but this cannot even be considered until the previous steps have been tried and have failed.

At the end of the day, just having common courtesy will avoid these kinds of situations. Maybe just offering the neighbour a burger straight off the grill will keep the mood light and tempers cooled!

Eyes to the skies: Perseid meteor showers back all month

The annual Perseid meteor showers are back throughout the month of August, with the 13th being a particularly good night to catch them in the skies above Monaco and France.

Look up, everyone! The August night sky is filled with wonders, notably from the spectacular return of the Perseid meteor showers, which light up the heavens over France until 24th August.

This shooting star show will best be seen on the night of 13th August from midnight onwards when an estimated one meteor per minute will be visible to the naked eye. This year’s event will be more dramatic than last year, when a Super Moon vied for the showers’ attention and dimmed viewing.

WHERE TO LOOK

Clear nights will aide in being able to see the showers, which are best seen when looking toward the northeast and the Perseus constellation. The bottom of the “W” formed by the constellation Cassiopeia is where the shooting stars originate from, and emanate from the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet… which takes 133 years to circle the sun.

HOW BEST TO SEE

Minimising the amount of light pollution helps when looking for the Perseid showers. This means heading out to the countryside, a nearby park, the beach or even just turning your back to streetlamps if heading out of town is not possible. People’s eyes need at least 15 minutes to adjust to the dark to catch the fainter meteors so avoid looking at any light source, including phones, during this time. Finally, don’t forget to make a wish, or wishes…may they all come true!

La Pérouse in Nice has reopened after “magical” renovation

La Pérouse Hotel in Nice has reopened after a total renovation that blends the old and the new, and the result is spectacular. Here’s everything you need to know.

In May 2023, La Pérouse reopened its doors after a total makeover. Whilst this may imply a complete modernisation, that is only a part of the story of this lovely boutique address, which has been hosting the rich and famous, such as author James Joyce who started writing Finnegan’s Wake at the hotel in 1923, for over a century.  

TRANQUILITY CENTRAL 

The project was managed by Friedmann and Versace Studio, and was the first hotel the designers have tackled.  

“La Pérouse is a magical place,” say Virginie Friedmann and Delphine Versace, the duo behind the studio. “We couldn’t imagine a better opportunity for our first venture into hotel design. This place has every possible advantage: incredible views, an ideal location and plenty of surprises.”

It’s just minutes from Nice’s Old Town and the flower market on Cours Saleya, the hotel features terraces cut into the side of Castle Hill, a rooftop solarium, a glorious citrus garden, a pool carved out of rock and the most incredible views around.  

But the most astounding thing is the peace and quiet. Despite being a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle below, La Pérouse is an oasis of calm.  

A ROOM WITH A VIEW 

Nearly all of the 53 rooms in the hotel have sea views and outdoor lounging areas where guests can gaze down at the world going by whilst sipping a cool drink.  

The décor is elegant and tasteful with an Art Deco feel that isn’t old-fashioned in the least. The soft curves of the furniture are joined by a neutral palette yet punctuated by warm colour pops and some rather funky touches, such as a plastered fireplace that looks like something straight out of Dr Seuss.  

Terre mêlée ceramic tiles from Italy, moulded daub wall lights, coral lamps sourced in Palermo and exquisitely wrought banisters are just a few specific touches the team brought to the space.  

“For the La Pérouse project, [they] went into every detail, selecting objects and materials with equal precision,” says the hotel management. “Most were either bespoke or found on hunts through local galleries. Under [Friedmann and Versace’s] direction, at least 10 artisans and artists took part in creating a décor that is entirely unique.”

THERE’S A RESTAURANT TOO 

The hillside restaurant, Le Patio, has been an open secret amongst Niçois for decades and is an ideal spot for a romantic meal. The terrace is dotted with lemon tress, which offer shade and a bit of privacy, but it’s the food that keeps people coming back.  

Chef Damien Andrews, who has been a member of the Association of Escoffier Disciples since 2022, “cooks from the heart”.  His skills were honed under his mentor, Chef Patrick Raingeard, who received Michelin stars at Monaco’s Port Palace and at Cap Estel. 

The cuisine is simple and employs plentiful local ingredients, allowing the food’s flavours to speak for themselves without heaviness.  

“My aim is to show off these products via a sharing menu that uses well-honed techniques to bring out the most refined expression of their essential flavours,” he says.  

His signature dishes include: a 1.5kg tomahawk steak accompanied by a homemade Béarnaise sauce; slow-cooked monkfish with violet artichokes and Niçoise olives; sea bream with raspberries and ginger; and, for dessert, an espuma au yahourt with red fruits.

Verge Motorcyles: The “technological leader” in an increasingly green industry

Whilst the car industry has been on the long road towards sustainability for many years, the motorcycle industry has lagged behind. With the help of Mika Häkkinen and Valtteri Bottas, Verge Motorcycles are now changing that.

Many car manufacturers have integrated greener models into their portfolios over the past years. This trend hasn’t been mirrored to the same extent in the motorcycle industry with major players in the market such as Harley Davidson and KTM slow to adjust to a changing world.

The same can’t be said for Verge Motorcycles. The Finnish business is growing, and now has its first shop in Monaco. Their fully electric motorcycle, constructed in Estonia, is growing in popularity to the extent that they plan to open another factory in the USA, and further shops across Europe. “Let’s do what Apple did to Nokia,” Verge CEO Tuomo Lehtimäki tells Monaco Life. The Finnish businessman is well on the way to shaking up the industry.

Some famous Finnish faces

Whilst Verge has not yet penetrated the mainstream, demand is on the rise. According to Lehtimäki, customers are “screaming” to buy their most popular bike, the TS Pro, valued at €36,900. Keeping up with that demand is key, and their plans to expand into the US are indicative of a business that is growing exponentially, just as the demand for electric bikes increases.

The personnel at Verge are a notable contributor to the business’ success. Mark Wilson, after impressive stints at McLaren and Aston Martin, is just one element of a world-class team of experts assembled by the Finnish company.

Verge is also benefitting from the profiles of some of its advocates and collaborators. Former Formula One World Champion Mika Häkkinen, a Monaco resident, has been on board since the start. “He is investing, advising, giving his knowledge of motorsport. It is good for our visibility,” says Lehtimäki.

Häkkinen’s residency in the Principality, coupled with Verge’s desire “to be associated with Monaco”, made the partnership a perfect marriage.

A carbon fibre “Mika” model, termed by Lehtimäki as a “collectable item”  is now on sale and can be seen at Verge’s showroom in Monte-Carlo.

Valtteri Bottas, currently driving at Formula One team Alfa Romeo, is also increasing the visibility of the brand. The Finnish driver and former teammate of Lewis Hamilton arrived into the paddock at the Monaco Grand Prix riding a Verge model. Through the support of two iconic Finnish drivers, Verge is becoming a national brand with international appeal.

“We are the technological leader”

A lot has changed since Verge came onto the market in 2018. Upon the release of their prototype, the charging infrastructure simply didn’t exist. However, in the words of Lehtimäki, Verge is a “technological leader” in the scene and is driving change.

Lehtimäki foresees the compulsion for evolution within the motorcycle industry, and within this context, is collaborative with the major players within the market. However, the Finnish entrepreneur wants to be a force for change within the field. “We want to be different,” he tells Monaco Life.

In a rapidly evolving industry, a rapidly evolving world, rivals may also have to be “different”. It is by being “different” that Verge has burst onto the market… and the market likes it.
