Reimagining a monument: Jean-Christophe Maillot’s ‘Roméo et Juliette’

From 29th October to 1st November at the Salle Garnier of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo presents the 30th anniversary of Jean-Christophe Maillot’s ‘Roméo et Juliette’. Rather than staging a predictable retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy, this iconic production strips away the daggers, vials, and flower-decked balconies to focus entirely on the psychological core of the story.

Performed by the renowned company that has taken this milestone across more than 400 stages worldwide through 16 international companies, the beloved staging returns home to revisit a masterpiece whose unique success stems from a daring premise: the entire story unfolds as a remorseful flashback from Friar Laurence, wondering how such a tragedy could ever have happened.

Inside the tormented soul of Friar Laurence

Rather than following the Capulets and Montagues to their bitter end, the ballet unfolds from the perspective of the churchman. In Maillot’s vision, the rival families are sixteen years old and bursting with life; their street brawls are harmless games until a single fatal blow plunges them into a spiral they are entirely unequipped to handle.

Cinematic choreography and a ballet of women

Choreographically, the production cemented Maillot’s signature style: classical vocabulary brought sharply into the modern era through cinematic storytelling. Borrowing techniques like freeze-frames, slow motion, and diagonal stage pathways that mimic a camera lens, Maillot treats his dancers like actors who never look at the audience.

Notably, the ballet centres heavily on its female roles – with Juliet, Lady Capulet, Rosaline, and the Nurse driving the narrative while the fathers remain in the background and the Prince of Verona is removed entirely. Using simple, stripped-back scenery created by Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Maillot’s masterpiece continues to prove that the true tragedy lies not in fate, but in the innocent passions of youth.

Camille Gottlieb to bring Global Gift Gala back to Monaco after €400,000 debut

The Global Gift Gala returns to the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo on Friday 9th October for its second edition in the Principality, with organisers looking to build on the roughly €400,000 raised during its inaugural event in 2025.

This year’s edition is once again being organised with the involvement of Camille Gottlieb and Medy Anthony through their agency CMC Consulting, following their role in bringing the international charity gala to the Principality for the first time last year.  Gottlieb, the daughter of Princess Stéphanie of Monaco and founder of Be Safe Monaco, has been involved in several charitable initiatives in the Principality.

The event forms part of the international Global Gift Gala series led by Global Gift Foundation founder Maria Bravo and honorary chair Eva Longoria, with galas held in Dubai, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi, and other destinations around the world. According to Anthony, the intention is for Monaco to become a recurring annual fixture on the Global Gift calendar, while maintaining a strong connection to the Principality.

LOCAL CAUSES AT THE HEART OF THE GALA

This year’s gala will benefit the Global Gift Foundation alongside Fight Aids Monaco and Corazones Unidos, the initiative founded by Alexandra Leclerc.

During a press conference on Monday, Anthony highlighted the importance of ensuring that the gala provides visibility for causes linked to Monaco.

“It’s important to include foundations from Monaco and involve people who work in Monaco,” Anthony said, explaining that the aim is to create a meaningful connection between the gala and the Principality.

APM Monaco, a longtime supporter of the Global Gift Foundation, returns as presenting sponsor of the event. Its relationship with Longoria also played a key role in bringing the gala to Monaco for its first edition. Despite a demanding schedule, Longoria is expected to make a brief trip to the Principality to attend Friday’s event, continuing her personal involvement.

LARA FABIAN TO PERFORM AS AUCTION RETURNS

The evening will also feature a performance by headline musical act Lara Fabian. Fundraising will continue through a live auction featuring several experiences and items. Among those revealed at the press conference is a helmet signed by Monaco Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc.

With its second edition, organisers are aiming to continue the momentum from the gala’s successful debut and establish it as an annual date on the Principality’s calendar.

Cannes’ Pink Walk to bring breast cancer supporters together on the Croisette

A 10,000-step walk along the Cannes coastline will bring participants together in pink on Thursday 15th October, as Lucia restaurant renews its support for La Ligue contre le cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Pink Walk will start at the Croisette restaurant and follow the seafront before participants return to Lucia for breakfast. Organisers are inviting walkers to wear pink, with the event designed to combine physical activity with an opportunity to connect and support the cause.

The walk forms part of Lucia’s wider October programme, spanning beauty, wellbeing, gastronomy and fashion. A portion of proceeds from the programme will be donated to La Ligue contre le cancer, although the restaurant has not specified the amount or percentage.

Members of the charity and former patients will also be invited to attend selected events throughout the month.
